| Dear friends, We have one more day in this vast metropolis. We have seen so many wonderful things, and yet there are so many more left out there calling to us. I doubt a month would be enough time to truly experience London. It is a city of lights and throngs of people, art and architecture, pubs and curry shops. It has been wonderful. Yesterday we made our way to the National Gallery of Art on Trafalgar Square. The collection houses European art from the early Renaissance to the modern day. We were wowed by paintings by the likes of Michelangelo, Raphael, Botticelli, Van Eyck, Rembrandt, Rubens, Monet, Manet, and Van Gogh. Absolutely, unbelievably incredible to see all those masters in one day. We spent the better part of five hours making our way around the museum. For dinner last night, we went to our first London curry restaurant. The food was cheap and delicious. I had a sampler plate with four different curry dishes on it, each better than the last. It was quite a dinner. We needed to walk for a while just to feel like ourselves again. Today will be laundry day. Since we are each only using carry-on luggage on this trip, a week is about as far as we can go without washing. We are hoping to hit the British Library before meeting up with Barbra and Yannis this afternoon. [Comments from Colleen: Hello everyone! Paul and I are having a wonderful time. We slept in yesterday, which I have convinced him is a necessity at least once a week--he seemed to enjoy it as much as I did, so I think I will be allowed to enjoy that luxury on occassion. After our first hotel room proved to be so noisy, we were moved to another room on the second floor, which has much more space generally, but a bathroom about the size of that on an airplane and three beds, none of which are big enough for both of us. So, we are getting great practice for our upcoming train showering and are sleeping separately. Paul is quite concerned that we are sleeping in separate beds after only 6 years of marriage....apparently he thought that didn't come until much later.... I am feeling great--two full days without any sickness and have gotten a lot of my energy back. I think I'm over the hurdle. Fingers crossed. We spent all day yesterday at the National Museum--great practice for the time I plan to spend at the Louve....every moment was absolutely wonderful. I have been keeping Paul flustered with my history jabs--not terribly nice, but great fun to see his reactions and to render him speechless if even for short moments. On our first day in London we were at the River Thames and Paul was gushing over the sight of it...I commented that I had always wanted to see the Nile and I couldn't believe that dream was actually being realized. Another especially strong reaction came to my questioning which one of the Marx brothers was Karl. History CAN be fun! We are currently waiting for our laundry and will then head off to the British Library before meeting my friend Barb and her husband Yannis for a late lunch. Tomorrow we are off to Wales to stay with our friends Ann and Terry for a few days. Hope you are all well!] Have a wonderful weekend, and well be in touch soon. Paul and Colleen |
