In Memory Of
Doc. Bill Biedel

Dr. C.W. (Bill) Biedel

Dr. C.W. (Bill) Biedel FPSA EPSA, passed away peacefully in his home on April 26, 2008. Members of the Photographic Society of America, the Northwest Council of Camera Clubs, and the f:67 Camera Club and many others lost a good friend, an outstanding photographer, a person of the highest integrity and ability, and an individual who always put the needs of others before his own. He is survived by his wife Margaret (Marge) Biedel APSA, his two sons, Rick and Jim, and their families.

Bill Joined PSA in October 1952, was elected an Associate in 1957, and was elected a Fellow in 1976.  He received his EPSA in 1997, the first year of EPSA.  He served as Director of Study Groups for the Color Slide Division from 1952 to 1957 and has served PSA in many other ways.  He has made photographic presentations at the international PSA conferences of 1968, 1979, 1984, 1985, 1988, and 1991, and presentations at Northwest Council of Camera Clubs annual conferences.  He served as a frequent judge of international exhibitions.  He and his wife Marge received the Gold Medal Award from the Nature Division, its highest award.  He was the current Chairman of the Nature Division’s Innovative Practice Committee.  He also spent a number of years on the Progress Award Committee of PSA, helping select individuals for PSA’s major service award.

After almost 5000 acceptances in international shows, Bill achieved the following ratings:  1st Diamond Galaxy (Galaxy VIII) in Color, Photo Naturalist II for marine biology and geology, Nature Galaxy III, and Photojournalist III.   He has been listed in Who’s Who for many years.    He received the Alfred Renfrow Memorial nature slide essay award in 1979.

Dr. Biedel, served with the U.S. Army as a medical officer in Europe, practiced pediatric medicine for more than 35 years in Bremerton, Washington, served on the staff of Children’s Hospital in Washington and was a Clinical Professor Emeritus of pediatrics at the University of Washington Medical School.  He served in leadership positions in professional and community organizations.  He followed his interests in natural history, the arts and sciences through his photography and his membership in several national and local organizations.

Dr. C.W. (Bill) Biedel will be missed by all who knew him.
