Huesca

The province

Huesca is one of the three provinces of Aragòn ( Zaragoza, Huesca y Teruel) , it's one of the most potential touristic province in Spain . Its mountains in the steepest part of the Central Pyrinees , its beautiful valleys and the evocative ruins of its castles built on rock, make up a whole in which nature and art combine in harmony.

During the summer the valleys of Ansó, Echo, Aisa, Borau, Canfranc, Tena, Broto, Bielsa, etc. offer the  traveller the chance to make attractive excursions, between woods, and through the mountains. In winter all types pf skiing can be practised in the province. The resorts of Formigal and Panticosa are in the Valley "de Tena" and have beautiful towns and landscape. In the Valley "de Benasque" there is Cerler, a very old typical town in Aragón . Nearby , are the long distance skiing pistes of los Baños de Benasque , at the foot of the Massif of the Maladeta-Aneto which enables you to practise sport while enjoying an incomparably beautiful natural background. Near the Town of Ansó, you can visit other famous ski resorts like Linza, Gabardito and Lizara. We must mention the town of Jaca, one of the most beautiful city in the province and of course the National Park of Ordesa y Monte perdido as well as the Park of Guara. In short the mountains are the most important attraction in the province.

Huesca was conquered by the romans , and during the Moslen Conquest was an important stronghold. From that period we only have a remaining part of the wall. The city was conquered from the Arabs by Pedro I of Aragon. The Cathedral, Gothic in style, was started at the end ot the 13th century , during the reign of Jaime I, and finished in 1500.Architecture is the pre-eminent art and sculpture take a second place. The alterpiece of the Cathedral was made between 1520 and 1533 and it's got several scenes of the Passion of Christ. In front of the Cathedral we have the town Hall, it's aragonese in style , and in the interior you can see the famous painting "La campana de Huesca".

Huesca has two important museums: the "Episcopal" and the "Museo ArqueológicoProvincial". In the "Museo episcopal" there are murals from the Romanesque-Gothic tradition, several Gothic alterpieces , a 16 adoration of the Kings in alabaster and pieces of precious metalwork. In the "Museo provincial" you can see prehistoric and roman objects.

We must mention the churches of "San Miguel" built between 1150 and 1160, "San Pedro el Viejo" built in the romanesque style and with a very beautiful cloister.

This beautiful and charming city is near the French frontier and the Pyrinees, it's got 46,700 inhabitants. The main sources are the agriculture in the small towns  in  the province, the tourism in the Pyrinees and in the city most of the population are clerks, lawyers, doctors or work in offices, banks, shops etc.
