Illinois Shelters and Rescues

IL-MO Rescue
This organization is licensed in the state of Illinois. They rescue small dogs (under 25 lbs) from puppymills and shelters that euthanize (the dogs they take from "kill shelters" are always on the short list).

The CatHouse
The CatHouse is dedicated to reducing the homeless feline population and saving animal lives. They work with a variety of rescue organizations in need.

Pets Are Worth Saving, Inc. (P.A.W.S.)
P.A.W.S. is a not-for-profit animal welfare organization. It was founded as a means of dealing with the increase in the animals population. PAWS is funded by donations , fund-raisers, membership, and grants, and serves as a support group for the Union County Animal Shelter.

The Humane Society of Central Illinois (HSCI) is committed to the prevention of cruelty, abuse and neglect of animals through its adoption center, cruelty investigations, spay/neuter assistance programs, and humane awareness.

Canton
Fulton County Humane Society (Central IL)
The purpose of this Society is to provide for the well-being of animals in the Fulton county area. The Society is organized as a nonprofit corporation under the General Not For Profit Corporation Act of IL.

Carterville
Community Animal Rescue Education (CARE)
CARE is an all volunteer, nonprofit 501(c)(3), nonfacility humane society whose mission is to help reduce the overpopulation problem by spay/neuter, educate the general public to pet responsibility, and offer humane education programs, including bite prevention, disaster preparedness, pet owner responsibility to schools and organizations. They also rescue pets who need new homes by placing them in breed rescue or help owners find a new home when they can no longer keep their pets.

Felines Inc
Felines Inc is a cageless, no kill cat shelter, operating in Chicago since 1977. They provide shelter and rehabilitation to injured, abused and abandoned cats and kittens until they can place them in a permanent and loving home.

Lake Shore Animal Shelter
Lake Shore Animal Shelter, Chicago's first no-kill shelter, is such a place for dogs and cats who become temporary residents. Since 1966, Lake Shore has worked to reduce the needless killing of pets through adoption programs, public humane education efforts, spay/neuter promotion and referral, and through community participation.

Orphans takes in, cares for and finds good and loving adoptive homes for thousands of stray and abandoned dogs and cats each year.

Edwardsville
Metro East Humane Society
Since its incorporation as a not-for-profit in 1986, the MEHS has worked diligently to improve the lives of animals. They currently serve a four county area in southwestern IL with an adoption program for homeless animals and an animal abuse/neglect investigation service.

Elizabeth
Safe Haven Humane Society
Safe Haven is a humane society that places all their cats and dogs through foster homes. They do not yet have a facility. They are also very involved in spay/neuter of feral cats in the rural county.

Grayslake
Save-A-Pet
Save-A-Pet is a not-for profit, no-kill shelter dedicated to finding loving, quality homes for each cat and dog in its care. Pets are sheltered indefinitely and never euthanized except in cases of terminal illness, unrelievable pain and suffering or dangerous and irreversible behavior problems. Their shelter strives to create an environment which enhances both awareness of and support for the humane treatment of animals.

Highland Animal Shelter (H.A.S.)
H.A.S. is an all-volunteer, non-profit, no-kill facility that has been in operation since 1986. They hope to provide food and shelter for all animals brought in by the City and it's residents, and to provide owners (original or new) for these pets.

Hinsdale
Hinsdale Humane Society
Hinsdale HS is currently celebrating 50+ years of service to the people and companion animals of the Chicago area. They focus on the care and adoption of unwanted and abandoned animals and the offering of humane education programs to prevent suffering and neglect.

Macomb
Western Illinois Dog Foster Care
This Center tries to adopt pets that need some extra help but are adoptable. They adapt them to a home atmosphere, do some behavioral work with them, and nurse them to health both physcially and emotionally. They have saved 11 dogs this year.

Pekin
TAPS No-Kill Animal Shelter
T.A.P.S. is a no-kill shelter that gives dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens a home until permanent homes can be found. They are one of the only no-kill shelters in central IL, located just outside Peoria.

Peoria
Foster Pet Outreach
Foster Pet Outreach takes in local abused and abandoned cats and dogs and fosters them in volunteers' homes. They get to know the animals and what home would be the best for them. They are able to save nearly 100 animals a year.

Peoria Animal Welfare Shelter (P.A.W.S.)
The Peoria Animal Welfare Shelter's mission is to operate a humane animal shelter and animal control program that provides housing for stray and unwanted animals, to educate the public on the humane and responsible treatment of animals, and to promote the sterilization of pets to reduce the number of unwanted animals born to the community.

Sparta
Randolph County Humane Society
This is a small shelter operating out of a temporary foster home in Modoc, Illinois, until renovations to their shelter are complete. The Randolph County Humane Society has many animals for adoption. You can call Lynn at 618-284-6686 for more information about adopting.

Springfield
Animal Protective League
This is a no-kill, non-profit shelter funded entirely by donations of money or supplies. They take in stray and injured animals, give them medical care, and adopt them to responsible pet owners. All of their animals are spayed and neutered before being adopted out. They also have programs to assist people in getting their own animals spay/neutered and in fixing feral cats.

St. Charles
Homes for Endangered and Lost Pets (H.O.M.E.)
H.O.M.E. is a state-licensed, not-for-profit organization that fosters cats and dogs in their homes until permanent loving homes can be found. They have all of their animals examined by a vet and spay or neuter those who are old enough. their adoption fees include spay/neuter for younger animals once they are of age, and is required as a term of adoption.

Wheaton
DuPage County Animal Control
This is a self-supporting county department designed to prevent and control rabies, enforce state and county animal control and welfare laws, operate a shelter for stray and owner-relinquished pets, adopt unwanted animals to responsible homes, promote responsible pet ownership through providing public education and rescuing animals that are lost, diseased, injured or in peril.

Missouri Shelters and Rescues

Aldrich
Polk County Humane Society
This Society works with the city of Bolivar to maintain their shelter, their income comes from adoptions and donations. They are a small shelter with only two full-time workers, plus all the volunteers, and are trying to remain a no-kill shelter, keeping all their animals until they are adopted.

Boonville
Boonville Animal Shelter
The Boonville Animal Shelter is a small 8 dog run shelter and can hold 6 or so cats. Their goal is to educate the public on how to be responsible pet owners and good neighbors, and to provide assistance to them to be just that.

Brentwood
Animal Protective Association of Missouri (APA of MO)
The Animal Protective Association of Missouri is a not for profit organization dedicated to bringing people and pets together, advancing humane education and building programs beneficial to the human/animal bond. The association provides pet adoption to responsible owners, shelters lost, unwanted and abandoned animals and works to reduce pet overpopulation. The APA extends community outreach programs to schools, hospitals, residential facilities and other area organizations.

Buffalo
All Creatures Animal Rescue
They are a strictly no-kill rescue that cares for all animals (right now mainly cats), primarily the senior and special needs animals who need a loving home to live out their lives. Saving Animals From Euthanasia (S.A.F.E.)
S.A.F.E. is a volunteer group dedicated to improving the lives of abused and unwanted pets. Working hard to give hope to the hopeless, they do not euthanize unwanted pets, and all of their animals are spayed/neutered, vacinated, and wormed.

Cape Girardeau
Humane Society of Southeast Missouri
This organization is an open admission shelter that takes in around 5,000 animals each year. Their goals are to provide refuge for homeless animals, adopt them into loving responsible homes, advocate spaying and neutering as the solution to the tragedy of pet overpopulation, and to educate the community about responsible pet ownership.

Chesterfield
Feline Connection, Inc.
Feline Connection is an all volunteer cat rescue that rescues cats and kittens that are strays and that are in shelters. They do not have a shelter, but take care of their animals in foster homes.

Columbia
Miller-Roth Animal Organization
MILLER-ROTH is an all-volunteer, not-for-profit organization founded in 1989, in memory of veterinarians Ann Miller-Roth and Jerry Roth. MILLER-ROTH offers assistance to anyone with a pet that needs a home, especially those who can no longer care for their pets due to illness or infirmity, and also helps provide veterinary care, supplies and food for the pets of low-income senior and handicapped citizens in Boone County, Mo.

Casey's Habit Purebred Rescue
Casey's is a small home-based No-Kill Rescue. They make monthly trips to the St.Louis area. They believe that together we can win the war against the greed that has taken over the dog world.

Higginsville
Save our Strays, Inc.
SOS is an organization dedicated to the ending of Healthy Pet euthanasia. They rescue healthy cats and dogs from area Kill shelters and try to give them a home with their Adoption Weekends at local PetsMart Stores.

Manchester
Open Door Animal Sanctuary (O.D.A.S.)
O.D.A.S. is a no-kill shelter that has a license for 200 animals. They give the animals good care at the shelter, walking the dogs 3-4 times a day, giving the cats a huge area to run and play, and giving all the animals the love they deserve. This shelter is open 365 days a year, and is truely dedicated to the animals.

Marshall
Saline Animal League
The Saline Animal League works out of the city shelter in Marshall, Mo. SAL helps find homes for them, takes them to the vet for care and gets most of them spayed or neutered before adoption. They are at the shelter daily, and know the animals well. Their email address is [email protected]

Cats "R" Us
CATS �R� US is totally a non-profit, all volunteer group of loving, dedicated foster homes licensed by the state of Missouri. Their sole purpose is to rescue abandoned, abused and unwanted cats and kittens. Their goal is to bridge the gap between rescue and adoption. Each cat is neutered or spayed, receives its shots, tested for Feline Leukemia and FIV, wormed, treated for fleas and ticks and given lots and lots of �Tender Loving Care�.

Castaway Animal Rescue Effort (C.A.R.E.)
C.A.R.E. is a no-kill animal sanctuary in Southwest MO. They specialize in rescues from either shelters that kill or injury cases where local authorities ask them to help.

Sikeston
Sikeston Bootheel Humane Society
There's a place in our community where the hungry are fed, the homeless are sheltered, and abandoned are given care. It's at Sikeston Bootheel Humane Society, where they provide comfort and care for our community's unwanted animals.

St. Peters
Heartland Humane Society
This Society is a non-profit group of dedicated foster homes, founded in May of 1998 by a few caring people, for the sole purpose of giving abandoned, abused, and unwanted animals another chance for a loving, permanent home.

St. Louis
The Cat Network
The Cat Network is a non-profit, cat rescue based in St. Louis, Missouri. They save abondoned, abused, stray, and traditional-shelter cats. Cats are kept in "foster care," then placed in good permanent homes whenever possible.

Humane Society of Missouri
The Humane Society of Missouri is committed to the prevention of cruelty, abuse and neglect of animals in Missouri through our adoption centers, veterinary medical centers, farm, rescue and investigation units, and community outreach and educational programs.

Mutts -n- Stuff
400 animals a month are put to sleep in just Jefferson County because no one cared enough to have them spayed/neutered. Just doing basic obedience can make a pet a wonderful animal. Mutts -n- Stuff is trying to help. But they can't do it alone. Their wish list includes: Towels, Washing machine soap/softener, peroxide, cotton balls, shredding, old tee-shirts, rubbing alcohol, and much more.

PetSearch of St. Louis
PetSearch is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to reduce the suffering of unwanted dogs and cats by caring for them and finding each a permanent, loving home. Animals come to them as strays and from animal control facilities. Rescued pets are shown at Petco-Fenton, at Hwy 141 and Gravois, every Saturday and Sunday from 11:00am to 3:00pm.

Pound Pals
Pound Pals is the not-for-profit, all volunteer auxiliary of the St. Louis City Animal Center - commonly known as the City Pound. Pound Pals is a group of volunteers dedicated to the animals at the City Animal Center. Our members come from all walks of life. They are concerned people about the welfare of the animals who end up at "the pound".

Save a Pet
Save a Pet is not a shelter, but provides web space for pets in need of new homes. If you have a pet that needs to find a new home please contact them and they can put your pet on the website. You can send them a picture and a paragraph about your pet.

St. Louis City Animal Center
We are an animal control facility operated by the City of St. Louis Department of Health. We were originally known as Rabies Control and The Pound. Most of our available pets are unclaimed strays or pets relinquished by their owners. We attempt to find homes for as many adoptable dogs and cats as possible but unfortunately we take in many more animals than we can ever place.

Stray Rescue of St. Louis
Stray Rescue's sole purpose is to rescue stray animals in need of medical attention, restore them to health, and place them in loving adoptive homes.

Troy
Pets A-Lone Sanctuary (P.A.L.S.)
P.A.L.S. was founded in 1989 as an all volunteer, non-profit, foster home, animal rescue organization. Their basic goal is to find good homes for impounded, stray or abandoned, and owner turned in pets. They're based in Troy, Lincoln County, Mo. but their scope of operation extends into neighboring counties and just into St. Louis. (many of their adoption events are held in Bridgeton and St. Charles).

Warsaw
Nelson Rolf Animal Shelter
Their mission is to strengthen the unique relationship between society and animals. They promote animal welfare in a number of ways, including, but not limited to, reuniting lost animals with their owners, educating the community about pet overpopulation, abuse and neglect, neutering or spaying all pets prior to release after adoption, finding homes for unwanted pets, and providing humane care for all animals in our shelter.

West Plains
West Plains Department of Animal Control
This is a state licensed DOG POUND that only takes in dogs that are from inside of the city limits. They only have a 7 pen facility, so they can't help as many animals as they would like. Most of the animals have been brought in and dumped, but that is the norm nowadays. They wish they were not needed in this line of work, but that would be a perfect world and that in not possible.

West Plains Regional Animal Shelter
This no-kill shelter is small, with only a few volunteers. They can house 35 dogs and 60 cats. They also have a Thrift Shop to help fund the shelter and are always doing fund-raisers.

Willow Springs
Willow Springs Animal Shelter
Willow Springs is a Division of the City of Willow Springs and operates under the Willow Springs Police Department. Basically that means that they have an Animal Control Officer instead of a "dogcatcher". They no longer call their Shelter "the pound" although that has been a really hard habit to break. Currently, they have no place to keep cats but are working on building a small portable building for cats. Willow Springs hopes to have a digital camera soon so that they can start posting pictures of the animals in the near future.

St. Louis Purebred Dog Rescue
The Purebred Dog Rescue is a non-profit organization that rescues purebred (and not so purebred) dogs from Pounds, Shelters and owners who no longer want them. They foster them in their homes and try to find the perfect forever home for them. While the dogs are in their homes or one of their foster homes, they work with them on basic obedience and if the dog has been abused, starved or has health problems the rescue tries to work to correct the problems prior to placing the dog. Some of their dogs might be in foster care for up to a year, depending on their needs. All of the dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested and microchipped prior to placement in their new homes. The website lists all of the breed representative and has links to their individual websites. Many of the Groups are also listed below.

Airedale Terrier
Airedale Terrier Rescue and Adoption (ATRA)
The ATRA is a nation wide organization that rescues Airedales and finds adoptive home for them. They operate mainly in the Midwest but we are affiliated with a national rescue organization.

American Eskimo
American Eskimo Rescue of St. Louis--St. Louis, MO
This rescue is a not for profit organization, all volunteers, that rescues American Eskies that are in danger of death at the local lounds or shelters. They do all medical work, including spaying and neutering, and then put the dogs in foster homes where they can be socialized and evaluated for their permanent homes.

Australian Cattle Dog
Midwest Australian Cattle Dog--Sidney, IL
This organization's small not-for-profit rescue tries to find new "forever homes" for Australian Cattle Dogs (aka, Blue Heelers, Red Heelers, or Queensland Heelers). All animals are thoroughly evaluated in our foster homes and vetter before being placed.

Australian Shepherd
Aussie Rescues for the Midwest--whole area
These rescues work with ARPH, which tries to determine what types of homes are suited for the many different types of rescued Aussies. They do an extensive screening of potential adoptive homes to make sure that they place the right dog into an environment that matches its temperament and activity level.

Boxer Rescue--Florissant, MO
Boxer Rescue is a not-for-profit, all volunteer organization dedicated to providing breed information and placing unwanted boxersinto new, loving homes. They don't have a shelter or kennel, rath volunteers offer up their homes for the homeless boxers to live until they can find new homes.

Brittany
Brittany Rescue--Platte City, MO
The Brittany Rescue organization is dedicated to rescuing Brittanys from shelters or other situtations where they may need to be rehomed.

Collie
Collie Rescue of Greater Illinois--Lisle, Illinois
They are a non for profit group that is run by volunteers. They take homeless collies in, neuter & spay, get them current on vaccinations, heartworm check, microchipped and professionally groomed. Once that's done they go into foster families until permanent placement is found for them. They go out with their dogs and do a home visit with every adopter.

Dalmatian
Spotsavers Dalmatian Assistance League (Rescue) of St. Louis--St. Louis, MO
Spotsavers Rescue depends on foster care for Dalmatians in need. They screen potential adopters, do a home visit and before placing a dal in an adoptive home. They also provide information and help for Dal owners who have problems, but don't need to give up their dals.

Doberman Pinscher
Doberman and Rottweiler Rescue --Paris IL
This rescue has been saving dogs for 17 years. All of their dogs are spayed/neutered , are current on vaccines, tattooed and checked for heartworm. Their # is 217-275-9243.

Doberman Rescue of St. Louis--St. Louis, MO
Doberman Rescue is a not-for-profit, all volunteer organization. We do not have a shelter or kennels, rather we take dogs into "foster care". Our mission is to help as many dobermans as we can find the very best homes. All of our dobermans are spayed or neutered prior to adoption as well as up-to-date on shots, heartworm tested and microchipped.

German Shepherd Dog
Central Illinois German Shepherd Dog Rescue--Urbana, IL
This rescue is a not-for-profit rescue dedicated to finding loving homes for German Shepherd Dogs. Their website contains photos and information on adoptable dogs, frequently asked questions, an events calendar, a newsletter, and an alumni page of dogs placed by their rescue.

German Shepherd Dog Rescue of St. Louis--St. Louis, MO
German Sherpherd Dog Rescue is a non-profit all-volunteer organization that rescues purebred German Shepherds, Beagles and other cute dogs, mixed breeds and purebreds of all sizes from area shelters. We spay or neuter all our dogs, check them for heartworm, worm them, bath them, give them all their shots, microchip them, treat them with flea and heartworm preventative and see to any other health concerns. Volunteers care for them in their homes. When they go home with their new owners, our dogs also take with them a six-month supply of heartworm pills, a collar, training collar, leash, book on dog care, calendar and other information.

Golden Retrievers
Gateway Golden Retriever Rescue--St. Louis, MO
Gateway takes unwanted or stray Golden Retrievers and place them into new, hopefully lifetime homes. The dogs are usually placed in foster homes where they recieve a check up from the veteranarian, which includes shots, a heartworm check, a stool check, and spaying and neutering.

Love A Golden Rescue--St. Louis, MO
Love A Golden Rescue is a nonprofit corporation whose volunteers help find loving homes for Golden Retrievers in need. In addition, the volunteers provide education and information about responsible pet ownership.

Greyhound
Greyhound Companions--Brentwood, MO
Greyhound Companions is a rescue/adoption organization for retired racing greyhounds. It is an all volunteer organization with lots of wonderful people to help the dogs after they are done racing.

Greyhound Pets of America--Springfield, MO
Greyhound Pets of America is a volunteer non-profit organization providing information about and promoting adoption of retired racing greyhounds. They also promote cooperation with other adoption programs nationwide to further the placement of greyhounds as pets into responsible loving homes.

St. Louis Retired Greyhounds as Pets (R.E.G.A.P.)--St. Louis, MO
R.E.G.A.P. is a not for profit organization dedicated to finding responsible homes for Greyhounds who are no longer used or needed by the racing industry. Another goal is to inform the public that these retired racers make excellent, loving, and devoted pets. They intend to dispel the myth that racers are maen, vicious, high strung dogs.

Rescued Racers--St. Louis, MO
Rescued Racers is a local volunteer run non-profit organization that rescues and adopts retired racing greyhounds. They also promote their greyhounds and educate the public through community service programs, such as our Nursing Home Visitation program.

Miniature Pincher

They are a non profit, nationwide Miniature Pinscher rescue organization. You can find information on the dogs they have available all across the country, their Potential Home Questionnaire (application for adopting), Adoption Contract, and a lot of other useful information about Miniature Pinschers on their website.

Pit Bull
Missouri PitBull Rescue-- MO
The Missouri PitBull Rescue saves dogs from local shelters that may be on deathrow and find them good homes. All dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and evaluated for the best home environment. They believe Pitbulls have a bad reputation and want to try and change that.

Poodle
Poodle and Small Dog Rescue--Moscow Mills, MO
Poodle and Small Dog Rescue places unwanted and/or abandoned Poodles, small purbreds and mixed breed dogs. Most come from shelters around the St. Louis area while some are "owner turn-ins." All dogs are kept in foster homes, where they are socialized, taken to the vet, spayed or neutered,and cared for as if they were part of the family.

The Champaign County Rottweiler Rescue rescues, rehabs and rehomes rottweilers.

Doberman and Rottweiler Rescue --Paris IL

Schnauzer
St Louis Schnauzer Rescue--St. Louis, MO
This rescue is an all volenteer, non-profit organization that places unwanted or abandoned schnauzers (mini, standard, and giant) into pre-screened homes. All dogs are seen by a vet and given shots, tested for worms, spayed or neutered, treated for illnesses, micro-chipped and groomed. They are placed in foster homes until a permanent home can be found.

Shetland Sheepdog
Second Chance Sheltie Rescue of St. Louis--St. Louis, MO
Second Chance Sheltie Rescue places shelties in foster homes until they are matched with a suitable family, which are carefully screened, homes checked, and have the mandatory fenced yard. They not only rescue animals, but also rehabilitate and train them to help them in finding forever homes.

Central Illinois Sheltie Rescue--Bloomington, IL and Springfield, IL
Central Illinois Sheltie Rescue is a non-profit, volunteer organization that helps homeless or abandoned shelties. Each sheltie is treated for medical problems, spayed or neutered, brought current on all shots, wormed, treated for fleas and ticks, and groomed. All shelties are then placed into permanent, loving homes.

Shih Tzu
Fuzzy Paws Shih Tzu Rescue--St. Louis
Fuzzy Paws Shih Tzu Rescue Missouri is a member of the Midwest Fuzzy Paws Rescue subsidiary of our national Shih Tzu Rescue group. They do not limit our placement to the St Louis area and have dogs available for adoption in other areas of the Midwest. Their group consists of caring volunteers dedicated to finding loving homes for Shih Tzu in need. These Shih Tzu have been found as unclaimed strays or abandoned, abused or neglected. They also come from owners who can't give them the care they need.

Siberian Husky

This is a non-profit group of volunteers who help give stray, abandoned, abused, or otherwise homeless purebred Siberian Huskies a second chance at life by finding suitable, adoptive homes. It is centrally located in Illinois just outside Bloomington.

Weimaraner
Weimaraner Rescue Club of America--Belleville, IL
The club rescue comittee works to provide rescue, care, and adoption for lost, surrendered, and homeless Weimaraners. They also try to provide pblic education on the breed and on responsible dog ownership.

Corgi Rescue of St. Louis is an all volunteer, 501(C)3 tax-exempt, not-for-profit organization. Their mission is to place as many unwanted and abandoned Welsh Corgis (Pembroke and Cardigan), as well as the occasional mixed breed and other purebreds, into suitable adoptive homes as possible. Their dogs are fostered in homes of volunteers until just the right home can be found. Interested families can submit an application if they are interested in adoption.

The Westie Rescue of Missouri, Inc. was formed to prevent the cruelty, abuse or neglect of Westies; to provide rescue services, rehabilitation, and medical treatment for Westies; to place rescued dogs in appropriate homes; and to monitor their future treatment.
