Cheating Policy/Honor Code

Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy High School

Mr. Patrick C. Sandoe

Academic dishonesty has become a major crisis in America. Because of this crisis, the instructor provides this opportunity for students to rise to a standard of excellence in which we can all take pride.

Cheating is, very simply, wrong. It degrades a person’s character, prevents that person’s growth as an individual, and feeds the growing sense of entitlement that threatens the greatness of our nation and society. To copy another person’s work, to share one’s work with someone else, to steal tests, to plagiarize material from another source, to copy homework from a classmate, are all examples of cheating. They are also acts of disrespect. Cheating demonstrates a lack of respect for oneself, for one’s friends, for one’s classmates, and for me as a teacher. For me NOT to address this topic would be an act of disrespect on my part.  For this reason, I have decided to address this topic from the beginning of this course. It is my hope that you will join me in an attempt to eliminate this practice. A grade that is obtained through cheating is worthless. No number of points can replace integrity lost.

I am asking you to take pride in yourself.  If you write a paper, make certain it is your own work, and cite your sources. Don’t cut and paste someone else’s work from the internet. If you don’t do your homework, don’t copy it! Stand up and face the consequences of your actions. I respect an honest person who does not do his/her homework far more than a dishonest person who pretends he/she did it. Do not lie to me, and do not cheat in this class. Please extend me this courtesy. I will treat you with the same courtesy.  If you are caught cheating, you will be punished to the fullest extent possible.

If you are willing to make this commitment, which states that you will not cheat in this class for the 2008-2009 school year, please copy the statement below and sign this paper. I will also require, according to school policy, that on every piece of work that you hand in to me, you write “On my honor as a student at Archbishop McCarthy High School, I have neither received nor given aid on this assignment/exam.” I thank you for your cooperation regarding this matter and ask for your sincere help in implementing this policy.

·         I will commit to do my part to eliminate cheating in Mr. Sandoe’s class by pledging not to partake in any behavior that promotes cheating whatsoever. By my signature below, I promise never to cheat, in any form, in this class.
