Bulletin Boards For January, M . L . King Jr.'s Birthday and EVEN -- Black History Month . . .
Each student makes a 5 inch snowflake from white tissue paper. (Fold the 5 inch square into a triangle. Fold this triangle in three equally. Trim off the bottom to make the triangular shape look even again. Now cut various designs into the snowflake. Make it unusual -- it is your unique design! Have each student write a short paragraph about why they are each unique. The final copy of the paragraph is written on an index card. Then both the index card and the snowflake is attached to Columbia Blue construction paper. They are stapled to the bulletin board and then a banner made on a computer program or diecut letters are placed at the top of the bulletin board stating: "Like snowflakes, we are all unique."

Writing Fun: "If it snowed in Los Angeles, I would . . ."
Many of my students had only seen snow on television, in the movies and from a distance on the mountains. I gave them this prompt as an essay starter and I got some wonderful beginnings. I think they love snow as much as I do! I took 4 of the essays -- which had great ideas in them -- and read to the class one at a time. We talked about adjectives we could add, words we could change using a Thesarus, and how to better organize the great ideas they had written in their first draft. It was a collaborative effort. We came up with some wonderful essays and it taught cooperation, revising and following state standards for writing.
