Need for Speed Underground 2 Review
Need for Speed Underground 2 is the sequel to last years best selling racing game based around customizing cars. One of my biggest gripes with last years game was that almost all the tracks looked the same. This years installment improves on that and everything else in the game.
When you first start playing Need for Speed Underground 2, you will notice that there is now a free roaming map similar to the GTA games. This map helps give the feeling that you are in a living, breathing racing world instead of just navigating menus. I liked the waypoint system where you can choose where you want to go on the map and an arrow on top of the HUD will show you where to turn like in the Crazy Taxi games. The map is very large and you open up more parts of it as you progress. The fact that you have to drive to each different customizing shop to get different parts might frustrate some people. The new free roaming map for NFSU2 adds a new element to the gameplay, but some people might not like driving to each place.
The customizing elements are just as good as the first one where you can change every part on your car and change it to whatever color or design you want. Its fun to go online and show off your ride to others. The story is told through comic book like strips. Some people might dislike it if they wanted real motion cutscenes, but I think its a pretty cool step away from the usual. The graphics in the cities are amazing. The game uses many motion blur effects to make it seem like you are going fast. The water and lights have awesome graphical effects. The cars all look great with their custom designs. The sound is very realistic and the music is pretty good.
Most importantly, the gameplay is pretty solid. The cars handle very well and you get a good sense of speed. The cars do not take damage, but that is better because it gets rid of frustration. Like I said earlier, the tracks now all look different from each other unlike the first version, which is a very good thing. There are more racing types this year and all of them are incredibly fun. Handling is a very important part of racing games for me and I have no problems at all with the handling in this game.
Overall, Need for Speed Underground 2 is an awesome racing game, which is one of the best this year. Anyone who likes racing or customizing, will like this game a lot. Although I like the game a lot, it is not perfect. I give it a 9 out of 10.
