January/February, 2001, UPCOMING EVENTS Thursday, January 18 will be Math Night. After a very brief PTA membership meeting at 6 PM, we will have a math workshop with teachers from each grade and the math professional staff developers. All parents are urged to attend, so you can be better prepared to help your children with their math homework and test preparations. The annual international dinner is scheduled for Tuesday, February 13 at 6 PM. This annual tradition allows us to celebrate the diversity of our student population and enjoy cuisine from all of the countries represented in our school. All parents are invited to prepare their favorite dishes. We will be selling Valentines Day gift items and school T-shirts, and there will be a musical performance by some of our students led by music teacher Mr. Solow. Watch for more details. The PTA will hold a Penny Drive in January and Febuary as a fundraising event. Your small donations can add up to a significant amount of money to support school activities. Puppets in the Park will be visiting the school to give performances of "The Reluctant Dragon" to pre-K through 5th grade on February 14 and 15, and to give classroom workshops on puppet making on February 14, 15 and 16. The children at the Day Nursery will be invited to attend. Report cards will be distributed on February 2. Potential holdover notices will be sent to those children who have been identified as at risk of not being promoted. Parents of these children will be invited to meet with principal Sherry Gregory and the childs teacher. The annual Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) program will take place in March. All children in Grades 3 and 5 will receive books that they can take home and keep. This program is meant to encourage children to read, and we are targeting those grades that will be taking the City and State reading tests. A Federal grant is paying for 70% of the cost of the books, and the PTA will pay the remainder. The next meeting of the School Leadership Team is scheduled for February 9 at 7:30 AM. MUSIC PROGRAM Grants Officer Jim Tendean-Luce has prepared a grant application to RIOC for a Public Purpose Grant to fund a multicultural music project that would be conducted by our music teacher, Mr. Solow, and would involve both 217s students and Island residents. Jim and First Vice President Mosud Mannan made a presentation to the Roosevelt Island Residents Association (RIRA) Common Council asking for their endorsement of our application to RIOC. We also will be asking other Island organizations to support our application to RIOC. |
