Elections were held at the May 16 meeting for the PTA executive board and parent
members of the School Leadership Team for the 2001-2002 school year. The new board
includes: President Erin Feely-Nahem, 1st Vice President Mosud Mannan, 2nd
Vice President Julian Stein, 3rd Vice President Emma Sosa, Treasurer Lydia Tom,
Recording Secretary Sandy Newell, Fundraisers Mary OBrien Miranda, Sandra Morabito,
Carol Elvaz and Rose McCarthy, Parent Outreach Liaisons Rose McCarthy, Sandy Newell, and
Wendy Hersh, Representative to the United Parents Association Louis Monroe, Representative
to the Beacon Program and Youth Center Wendy Hersh, and Grants Officer Jim Tendean-Luce.
We still have a vacancy for Corresponding Secretary, and we can elect additional
fundraisers and parent liaisons. Anyone who wishes to serve in these positions can be
elected in September.
We also elected parent members of the School Leadership Team, which works with the
school administration to establish educational policies and priorities. Team members are:
Mosud Mannan, Julian Stein, Mary OBrien Miranda, Emma Sosa, Rose McCarthy, Jim
Tendean-Luce, Wendy Hersh, and Lydia Tom. As PTA President, Erin Feely-Nahem also is
automatically a parent member of the School Leadership Team. The team also includes the
principal, the UFT chapter president, and other teachers elected by the faculty.
presides at all meetings
of the membership, is an ex-officio member of all committees, countersigns checks and acts
as Executive Officer of the PTA. The President also serves on the School Leadership Team.
The President must have served on the Executive Board for at least one term prior to
assuming the position of President.
1st Vice President chairs the committee of parent outreach
liaisons, is empowered to sign checks, coordinates general meeting program content with
the president, and arranges parent/teacher hospitality gatherings.
2nd Vice President works with the Communications Committee to
publish a monthly newsletter, is empowered to sign checks.
3rd Vice President represents the PTA off-Island to the
Community School Board and the Parent Council of School District 2, arranges communication
to parents regarding District meetings, workshops, and special events.
Corresponding Secretary attends to all correspondence including receipts
for donations, and keeps the PTA contributors database current.
Recording Secretary keeps records of all meetings and presents copies of
the minutes to the Executive Board.
Treasurer has custody of all monies of the PTA, keeps an accurate record
of receipts and expenditures, reports monthly and submits a financial statement at the end
of the year to the Executive Board, signs checks for the withdrawal of funds authorized by
the membership, with the President, 1st Vice President, or 2nd Vice
President, assures that the PTA meets all tax and regulatory obligations.
Fundraisers oversee all PTA activities that generate income, decide with
the Executive Board the nature, schedule and organization of events.
Parent Outreach Liaisons work with the 1st Vice President to
maintain class lists, work with teachers to recruit contact parents for each class, gather
and maintain parent volunteer lists, maintain a calling chain to notify parents about PTA
activities.
Grants Officer researches and applies for grants, works with the
principal and others seeking funding, works closely with the Treasurer to coordinate
financial activities concerning grants.
