What does the PTA do?
Some parents may not be aware of all that the PTA does for our school and
our children. The PTA plays a major role in the daily activities of PS/IS 217.
 | We raise funds to support school activities, because the Board of Education does
not provide enough money to meet all of the schools needs. PTA fundraising helps pay
for class trips, after-school activities, the Reading is Fundamental book program, and
other special events. We also help pay forcopying machines and paper that are used to send
you notices about these events, and to help the school conduct routine day-to-day
operations. |
 | We try to help the teachers obtain the materials they need in their classrooms.
Many teachers pay for extra supplies out of their own pockets to meet their classroom
needs. Last year, the PTA provided funds that enabled teachers to purchase books, paper,
pencils and markers, calculators and maps, and other materials that they need to enhance
the childrens learning experience. |
 | The PTA organizes many special events, including the annual Halloween Carnival, Career Day and Book Fairs. |
 | The PTA provides funds for the cultural enrichment programs provided by Young
Audiences, one of the foremost arts-in-education organizations in the nation. Those
programs include creative movement, dance, music, improvisational theater, animation,
poetry, and quilt making, as well as evening workshops for parents. Through Young
Audiences, children have learned to write and perform their own operas, met with
world-famous artist Peter Max, and received free tickets to Broadway shows and other
performances. |
 | The PTA assures a strong parental presence in the school. Several parents are
Official School Volunteers, helping in the library, cafeteria, and school office. Parents
and PTA officers conduct school tours for parents who are considering enrolling their
children in the school. Parents participate in Read Aloud Week, coming to school to read
to their children's classes, and help to conduct annual eye and hearing tests. |
 | The PTA maintains a close working relationship with the Roosevelt Island Youth
Center, which manages the Beacon Program that provides many recreational, cultural,
and educational activities in the school after school hours. |
All parents are welcome to participate in PTA activities. In fact, the more
parents who volunteer some of their time, the more effective the PTA can be. Please come
to PTA Board meetings and general meetings, stop by the PTA office in the morning, send a
note, call us or submit the form below to find out what you can do to build a stronger
PTA.
