If there's one thing Half-Life needed (and there isn't) it's a grappling hook. Opposing Force cleverly worked this handy little device into the single-player game by taking advantage of the grapple-like enemy barnacles (aka tongue-monsters) from Half-Life. It adds a new dimension (literally) to multiplayer maps that provide the green organic goo patches necessary to use it. To use: aim at anything organic (such as an enemy or the green patches of goo that often surround the little alien-grenade-generating root things stuck to walls and ceilings on some maps), then press fire and hold it. The barnacle tongue will shoot straight out and stop at the first thing it hits. If it hits a person or monster, it sticks and pulls the person or monster toward itself, then starts chomping on them when they are in range (at a rate up to about 1 chomp per second if you keep pressing the alternate-fire key). It's a low-damage chomp, and the chompee can still attack you (especially since he's so close). If, however, the tongue hits a patch of green goo, it will stick and then pull YOU toward the goo patch as long as you hold down fire. Once it reels itself all the way in, you can hang there or move around to swing yourself as long as you hold fire. Releasing fire disengages the tongue. Releasing fire at the right time during flight can give you just enough forward momentum to get where you need to be, Practice. It's an excellent tool once you get used to it.
