1) Unparalleled Diversity. As you walk through the school,
you will see children from every ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic background.
2) Thoughtful and Caring Teaching of Every Child. Throughout
our general education, talented and gifted, and special education programs,
caring teachers assess every student to determine his or her needs and
individual learning style.
3) A Dedicated Principal. Our principal, Francis Del Monaco, demonstrates by his commitment to the well-being of every child that creating a positive learning environment starts at the top. Children are encouraged to take academic chances, and respect and understanding among peers is highly valued. He is also committed to providing strong teaching staff development and creating a welcoming atmosphere where parental involvement is encouraged and appreciated.
4) Excellent Enrichment Programs. To enhance the regular
curriculum, PS 11 has an amazing array of cultural and arts programs including
(but not limited to) Music and the Brain, Chess in the Classroom, Circle
in the Square Theatre School, The Juilliard School, Rosie’s Broadway Kids,
Ballroom Dancing, and Flamenco Dancing. In addition, all classes
go on frequent field trips around New York City in support of particular
areas of study, including an overnight camping trip in the upper grades.
5) Small Class Sizes. PS 11 has a history of keeping class
sizes small. This year, our kindergarten classes number 19 students
or less.
6) Marvelous Facilities. The PS 11 building boasts two music rooms, an art room, computer room, gymnasium, science room, auditorium, theater arts room, library, a newly soundproofed cafeteria and two playgrounds: a “little yard” off the second-floor classrooms for the exclusive use of kindergarten and Pre-K students, and a “big yard” off the cafeteria, utilized by all students, complete with a new Science Garden.
7) A Swimming Pool! PS 11 is the only public elementary school in the city with its own swimming pool. Newly refurbished, the pool is meticulously maintained by our custodial staff, and a full-time staff member launders students’ swimsuits and towels after every use. Swimming is a regular part of the school curriculum starting in the 2nd grade.
8) A Comprehensive Afterschool Program. Our afterschool program is available to all students and runs every full school day. It offers a wide range of activities including arts and crafts (knitting, pottery, cartooning), sports (basketball, tennis, karate, capoeria, swimming, etc.), violin and piano practice, drama, cooking, homework help, foreign languages, and more.
9) An Active PTA. The PS 11 PTA plays an active role in ensuring the school’s success. Comprised of a talented and resourceful group of parents, these dedicated individuals continually find creative ways to support the students, teachers, and staff.
10) The Lenox Hill School-Based Clinic. This resource offers
an array of healthcare services to students at no out-of-pocket expense
to parents. Parents who enroll their children in the clinic -- especially
parents of children who have asthma, allergies, or acute medical needs
-- have peace of mind knowing this hosspital-based clinic is in the building.
