Music Class Movie 

One of the many amazing music programs Ms. Golub brings to our school is Music Memory from the Riverside Symphony. The orchestra's program is designed to develop a lasting appreciation for fine music in young people and if you watch the seven minute video Ms. Golub made with the students from her Music Memory group, it looks like it’s a lot of fun. The video link can be found at

The Music Memory kids from P.S. 11 will be competing at Alice Tully Hall on May 9th. The wonderful contest is reminiscent of the old TV show Name That Tune. Students try to identify the musical pieces and composers they have studied from brief fragments and in the process demonstrate their amazing listening and recognition skills. To learn more visit the Riverside Symphony’s website.

Time for a Taste

June 3, 2005 is the tentative date for A Taste of Chelsea, 

P.S. 11’s biggest fundraiser of the year! 

If you’ve attended this event in the past, you know it’s an evening not to be missed. If you haven’t been there before, you’re in for a wonderful surprise, the evening offers parents, teachers, friends, and neighbors a chance to enjoy great food and wine while raising money for our children. 

Twenty of the finest restaurants and food merchants in the area will offer tastings from their menus as well as wine and other beverages. In addition, there will be a silent auction and a live auction, complete with a professional auctioneer from worldfamous Christie’s auction house. 

Expect to see a lot more information about this event in your child’s home folder in the coming weeks. But of course, we need volunteers! If you’d like to help, please contact Deborah Traussi at 2122680292 or Pam Winberry at 2129779857.

Cupcake Productions

The bake sale at the Little Shop of Horrors performance raised $502. The money will be used for future GarrickGolub productions.

Along with the promise of warmer weather last month came the fifth grade production of Little Shop of Horrors. When I first heard that Ms. Garrick and Ms. Golub were going to stage this ambitious production, I wondered how were they going to make Audrey II with a school play budget? Jim Harker to the rescue! That was quite an Audrey II...very impressive. Tom Winberry and I managed to set up a wireless microphone and amplification system for the show. And Tom along with Gil Santiago and Angelo Quartuccia also managed to complete the wiring and installation of the auditorium’s new lighting system. It was a great team effort for some great kids (I apologize to anyone I may have forgotten to acknowledge). While we were not without our share of "technical difficulties" during the performances, the play was well received. Congratulations to everyone involved on a job very well done.

March also brought us the New York International Children's Film Festival. If you've never attended this event, you're missing a great opportunity to see some first rate films from around the world....many unique voices with unique visions. One film that I enjoyed which has gone into limited release around New York is Millions. If it's still around when you read this, I recommend that you check this film out, or catch it on DVD. It's hard nowadays to find a film that you can take your children to and that you can enjoy as well. Millions fills the bill. It deals with issues of morality and the loss of a loved one. And it's also fun to follow a young boy as he tries to figure out what to do with the bag of money that "fell from the sky!”

Well, I'm looking forward to the springtime weather— when it finally comes. It's time for Little League. BATTER UP!!

Boxtops Update

General Mills Box Tops — So far for the 200405 school year, we have earned over $150.00 from box tops. Thanks to all of you who have submitted them, and especially those of you who have trimmed them for me. 

Target Visa — Please continue to use your Target Visa. We are due another check soon. 

Verizon Xtra Credit for Schools — If you haven’t done so, please sign up for this program with Verizon long distance, points appear on your monthly bill.

Campbell's Labels for Education — We have over 1,300 points from Campbell's. We will redeem the points for school supplies when more have accumulated. Please keep collecting them and put them in the Campbell’s Soup container next to security guard Jose Rodriguez’s desk. 

Tyson Project A+ — We are only 40 labels short of our first submission (we need 100 minimum) so keep them coming!
