| First I beheld that your eyes were threaded to mine By a bond invisibly forged Of heart and portent. And then the chord was fastened To the facets of your voice. You were carved by then, indellible, And spangled the finest portions of my memory. Now I would know you, if my eyes and ears defied me, By the pull of tautened tethers Just let slack by proximity. And later will we extricate ourselves From the ties that bind us, Slicing lifelines like veins To kill in the unfastening? Or will we, by twaining every line Just find us double-bound, Compelled by sleight of voice, eye, heart To cherish us? Now I am already sewn to you Like fingers of our entwined hands Willingly bound. For less than I could fight the sunrise Or the waxing of the moon Could I fight the morning-dew cobwebs That bind me fast to you. |
