| I've been diving since I was a little kid......a long time ago. I still remember having my dads' steel twin tanks and the double hose regulator in our back yard pool when I was about 8 years old. I finally took a real dive course with my father who wanted to refresh his memory of this fine sport in 1977. This was a fairly intense process because at that time there weren't all the levels there are today. Many different things were thrown in the mix and we had a good time. This completed the A.C.U.C. certificate and then about a year later we also recieved the P.A.D.I. Our deep dives were done in a lake East of Montreal and we did some wreck diving in the Richelieu River. The River proved to be very interesting due to the artifacts we found such as canon balls and clay pipes. I am not very fond of the cold water which is why my many summers in Guadeloupe totally got me hooked on the sport. Not too many places offer you the luxury of being at a 100 foot depth where you can still see the boat above you, without having to were a wet suit. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| What about the Chilliwack area? Remember what I said about being cold? Yes it is cold in the lakes...even in the summer. Cultus lake warms up fairly quickly but that's only about the surface where you don't want to be due to all the boat traffic. The thermocline is usually around the 20-30 foot level and there we go back to colder temperatures as the sun has a hard time getting through (usually 4.4 degrees). The best visibility i've had there was about 10-12 feet although it can be much better. Chilliwack Lake and Harrison offer better visibilitiy but are usually much colder. What's there to see? Not much. The North western side of Cultus has some neat drop off cliffs that go fairly deep. Harrison has some great sandy flats between the hot springs and the opening to the Harrison River. In the summer when things have been really calm we've had visibilities over 40 feet and you can clearly see where the sailboats have run their keels into the sandy bottom. If you're lucky you may even see the seal that fishes the opening of the river for fish. I was really surprised the first time I saw a seal in the lake. At first I thought it was a dog until he got close enough to see he didn't have any ears! | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
