Metaphors in HCI
by:
Richard Pruneau
The issues of metaphor and analogy in HCI and user interface design are problematic for the researcher and the interface designer. Not least because metaphor in HCI as a research topic is carried by peaks of interest.  Metaphor and analogy has been a source of division between designers since papers appeared in the wake of the first important metaphor-based systems.

Today, any interface is seen as a metaphor.  Metaphor theory has been well developed in an area of cognitive science called "cognitive linguistics" which is concerned with cognitive aspects of language.
