The Root name is believed to be of Teutonic origin, derived from the German Rot meaning “red” or “ruddy” and the old Saxon word rod defined as “gay” or “cheerful.” In ancient English and early American records, Root has been spelled Rote, Roote, Rootes, and Roots. The growing interest of Americans in genealogy and family history creates respect for, and pride in, the family name. Regarded as an emblem of family rather than nationality, the use of the coat of arms in many families continued after the Revolutionary War. Thomas and his sons, Rufus, John and Frank, came from eastern Iowa to Boone County to break prairie. Here Thomas died and was buried in Fairview Cemetery, a little country cemetery north of Perry, Iowa. The grave is near a large evergreen tree on the hillside but there is no marker. His sons returned to Jones County, where Frank worked in a rock quarry. Later members of the Thomas Root family moved from near Wheatland, Iowa to Wright and Franklin Counties, where many of their descendants now live.

His granddaughters, Ida and Lulu Root, and Mrs. Harriet Swift still lived on the farm in 1938. Just after Ozias married, he left his bride at her home and walked to Ohio to visit his family. It took him two weeks to make the trip each way and he spent two weeks there.

"Longtime Waukesha resident, Avon J. Mackay, died on October 16, 2001 at Waukesha Memorial Hospital at the age of 68 years. She was born on September 10, 1933 in Shell Lake, Wisconsin, the daughter of John & Alta (nee Root) La Rue.

Avon was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Waukesha. She was a very talented seamstress, specializing in children's clothes. In 1999 she took 11 outfits of children's clothes to Wisconsin State Fair and won 11 Blue Ribbons.

She will be sadly missed by her husband of 51 years William of Waukesha. She is the dear mother of Jeanne (William) Prue of Newport, Vermont, Kerry (Terry) Mackay of New Berlin, WI., Kathy (Bill) Rankin of Waukesha, Christopher (Christine) Mackay of Bayfield, WI., Jeffrey (Megan) Mackay of Lake Zurich, IL., Timothy (Kate) Mackay of West Allis, WI. & Steven (Toni) Mackay of Waukesha. She will be missed by her twenty grandchildren: William (Debbie) of Newport, Vermont, Jonathon (Angie) of Osan AFB in South Korea, Joshua, Rebecca, Elizabeth, Gretchen, Matthew, Melissa, Kimberly, Shawn, Linda, Crystal, Daniel, Diana, Patrick, Joseph, Jacob, Sarah, Nicole and Lillian. She is the dear grandmother of 6 great grandchildren: William, Taylor, Chandler, Emma, Jennifer & Amanda. She is also survived by her sister Vera Paulin of Medford, WI and her brother Lawrence La Rue of Albuquerque, New Mexico as well as many friends.

Josephine M. LaRue, 83, of Shell Lake, died on Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at Terraceview Living Center in Shell Lake.

She was born on Dec. 9, 1918, in Shell Lake to Anthony and Sophia (Ridell) Thibedeau. She attended school in Shell Lake and spent all her life in Shell Lake. She was employed in cooking, cleaning, and helping to run a resort.

Survivors include her companion, Alfred Hooser of Shell Lake; two daughters, Diane (Bill) Ruwe of Craig, Neb., and Pamela LaRue of Madison; four sons, Robert (Pam) of Stone Lake, Gary (Linda) and Lonnie (Lorretta), both of Trego, and Mark (Vicki) of Broadus, Mont.; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Violet Krakau and Lucille Brown, both of Shell Lake, and Vivian of Florida.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 25, at Pockat Funeral Home in Shell Lake. Rev. Charles Wendt will officiate. Burial will be in Shell Lake Cemetery.

Robert A. LaRue, age 66, a resident of Stone Lake, died Sunday, February 2, 2003 at his home.

He was born September 15, 1936 to Elmer and Josephine (Thibedeau) LaRue at Shell Lake and was raised there. He spent part of his life in Chaplin, Iowa where he owned and operated L&M Implement. He returned to Stone Lake area in the early 1980's and was employed as a mechanic at Bar H Implements in Stone Lake for 20 years.

On September 28, 2002, he was united in marriage to Pamela Brown Williams at his home. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and Rendezvous. He was a co-founder of the Lime Creek Rendezvous near Mason City, Iowa in the 1970's.

He is survived by his wife Pamela; his son Allen (Wendy Kuehnau) LaRue of Trego; two step-sons, Jason (Kristen) Williams of Shell Lake, and Mitchell Williams of Rice Lake; three step-granddaughters Kimberly, Jannah and Makalyn; three brothers, Gary (Linda) of Lampson, Lonnie (Loretta) of Trego, and Mark (Vicki) of Broadus, MT; two sisters, Diane (Bill) Ruwe of Craig, NE and Pamela LaRue of Madison. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Elmer, Jr. "Junnie".

Funeral services will be Thursday, February 6, 2003, at the Scalzo Funeral Home, Spooner with Pastor Mark Johnson officiant. Visitation will be for two hours prior to the services.
