Chapter Thirteen 'Sweet Misery'
Zac woke up to the sound of footsteps. Maybe he should have closed the door? But seeing as he wasn't sure if he could walk very well he had to live with the constant noise from the different wards and corridors. The corridors in hospitals creeped him out. They were so long and seemed to lead the nowhere. He could get lost in this place. He had decided when he was little that hospitals were the worst places on earth. Anything could be better than knowing how many people died in that place. Even the happy parts, like the children's ward. There was something about hospitals that screamed death. Like He was waiting around every corner.
Sneaking up behind you...
Zac jumped as the door opened. Wait, wasn't it closed? He wasn't sure.
"You awake?"
Zac sighed. "Ike, back so quick?"
Isaac nodded and turned the light on. Zac blinked at the sudden change and the room blurred as it took a while for his eyes to get used to it.
"Zac, I've got good news." Ike smiled.
"What?"
"I didn't kill anybody."
Zac smiled. "Good for you Ike." How nutty does that sound? "I'm glad you took my advice."
"Yeah." Ike walked up to his bed. "Wanna know why that is?"
Zac shrugged. "You have more self-control?"
"Nope." Ike sat on the bed. "Because I wasn't hungry."
Zac didn't get it. "What d'you mean?"
"I am now though." Ike continued.
He went for Zac. Zac tried to move but he couldn't. Nothing worked. Nothing worked.
"Ike no!" Zac yelled out.
Ike covered Zac's mouth tightly. Zac struggled frantically but nothing happened. "Why not?"
His teeth drew out.
"It's so easy..."
"Zac stop screaming!"
Zac continued to do so. Melissa sighed and shook Zac harder.
Zac opened his eyes and saw Melissa. He almost jumped out of his skin. But as he focused he only screamed more and moved away from her.
"What the hell are you doing here?"
"Seeing if you were Okay! Calm down!"
Zac finally got his breath back. "You know after nightmares seeing vampires is not the best medicine!"
"You remember then?" Melissa asked, disappointed.
"Sorry, your spell didn't work again." Zac smirked. He stopped and looked at her cautiously. "You're not hungry, are you?"
"No, that's not why I'm here. Are you really Okay?"
"Yeah, yeah. Apart from blood suckers coming round every corner," Zac glared, "I'm fine. Does Ike know you're here?"
"No. And you wont tell him I've been here either." Melissa glared.
"Hey, don't you even try anything, Okay?" Zac moved even further away.
"I'm only warning you, I wont try anything, I swear." Melissa almost begged Zac to believe her.
Zac relaxed a little. "Yeah, Okay." He paused for a second. "Any reason why you went insane on me?"
"You remember that too?" Melissa asked sadly.
"No, Ike told me about that." Zac replied.
Melissa looked at the floor as she sat down. "I didn't mean to Zac, I swear it. I just couldn't handle.." She stopped.
"Handle what?" Zac felt himself starting to care. He should hate her, stake her or anything. Instead he was acting like a friend to somebody he'd known all his life. There had to be logic but there was none. He just wanted her to be Okay, for some strange reason. She didn't look like a murderer, a monster, a demon...
She looked like a lonely girl, wait, woman, who just didn't know which path to turn to, in need of a friend.
"I didn't want to lose him." Melissa whispered.
Zac got up more in bed and hugged her as she cried. She needed it. In his arms he was holding something so fragile...
But she could kill him whenever she wanted to without a shred of real remorse.
