Islington Academy Review (21/10/2003)

As far as sleeping went for the night before (I knew I wouldn't gain much the next night =) I couldn't sleep. It was like Christmas Eve for me. So when I got up for RI:SE I was jumping about and ready to go. But I took my time, watched the show and was even close to asking them a question (maybe they thought I was asking a rude question when I said 'can they play DIRRTY tonight?'). Anyway my friends Kirsty and Rachael arrived and we set off on our adventure.
Unfortunately I can't read maps very well so in the end we followed a bike route through Islington to Angel, and when we got there we were gonna go shopping but the thought of queuing for six hours was just TOO tempting...
We sat around with Kay and her sister, Tiffany and the girl from Holland who's name slips my mind (sorry!) and sat around, calling ourselves the Homeless Alliance when peoples asked us what we were queuing up for.
At one point there was a surging que at the front, one at the back and then us in the middle spread out and seated and chillin'. It was surreal. Then everyone was screaming so we all ran for the car park to hear everyone screaming 'I see Tay!' We waited and spoke to Walker for a while (nice guy) and Tiffany was even near them as they got in the taxi-- bless her. Then the taxi came and we were just stood there waving and cheering as they walked in. One girl asked their dad if he could give Zac his present (a vodka shot) which he did, bless. We entertained the crowd with our LOVELY singing to pass time (which people tried to copy but got it all wrong) and then we finally got in.

The concert itself was outstanding. They were playing oldtime country and blues classics as we waited, so me and Rach danced our arses off. As they got on we were all shoved forwards but everyone gave in as the songs went on. I don't have a set list like Kay (forgetful) but highlights for me were Aint No Sunshine, which to be frank I thought they might screw up (it's a personal favourite and nobody can get it right when covering it) but Ike really made it sound like the classic but with the patented Hanson twist.
Zac's solo of Tightrope was outstanding in every sense, despite a bunch of stupid townies singing happy birthday halfway through (why?) but he continued so well that it just made everyone silent by the end. We were all in awe.
The accapella of Teach Your Children was brilliant-- it was like they were paying tribute to their Southern roots and making it sound fantastic.
I have never danced so hard before in my life though than from when they played Rock 'n' Roll Razorblade. I mean it's an UNplugged show and it might as well have been the closing for Woodstock! I was dancing/moshing with a guy named Dave and waving my lighter in happiness- it converted my friend into loving that song.
And when they announced that they had a new song just for us- the privilege mixed with the funkiness of the song meant nobody stood still for all of the four minutes it played. It rocked, to put it simply.
Their remediation of Rip It Up.. oh I'm lost for words. I just went crazy and started swing-dancing with loads of others who gave up shoving and just danced their arses off (as commanded by Tay! YES SIR!) The clapping was fun too but I couldn't help but yell out the song lyrics-- they're just plain cool. :)
The ending didn't feel like the ending and of course they came back on to play more funky tunes and make as feel just that more forgiving they haven't come here for a while. I nearly burnt off my fingers from my lighter by the end of A Song To Sing.

More highlights included the more-rocking-than-the-album-version-yet-unplugged You Never Know, Ike breaking his guitar string ("Never underestimate a man's own strength!") and then the lights going out and him looking up and saying 'ohhh!' haha. Zac climbing up the metal frame was funny except it was wobbling like crazy and we managed to sing happy birthday to him which he thanked. You should have heard the squeals when Ike mentioned he had changed his shirt (apparently Rach heard me shout 'hes making love to that guitar!' during Hand In Hand hehe) Taylor looked like he was going to fall into the crowd as he shook their hands and he's good at directing the snapping/clapping commands.
I think all in all everyone had just plain fun and if this is a thank you for waiting for so long for a concert/album, then what the hell will come with the album and full scale tour?
One can only dream....
