The use of Internet resources is an useful teaching tool to increase the level
of motivation of students in university courses by using the computer as a
virtual classroom. In that way we have developed on-line materials to be used as
an auxiliary tool for Analytical Chemistry I, an introductory course taken at
the first or second years of the Chemistry studies, and whose syllabus is
divided in three main blocks (1) General Analytical Chemistry, (2) Ionic
Equilibriums and Volumetric Methods and (3) Gravimetric Analysis. These blocks
are subsequently divided in several units or chapters developing the main topics.
The resources are structured around a web-page (index) from which the on-line
materials can be accessed. At this moment these materials include a development
of the course syllabus, auto-evaluation questions and numerical exercises, past
examination tests and a spreadsheet to illustrate and carry out repetitive
calculations.
The central element of the material is the syllabus development. Once selected,
the screen is divided in two frames: the left is the main one and is used as a
directory. Initially it contains the syllabus and by pointing to the adequate
hyperlink we can access a given chapter whose main topics appear at the left
frame overwriting it. Now a topic can be chosen and a summary sheet will appear
at the right frame. The Figure shows a view of the screen with an example of
summary sheet.

The summary sheets have been developed as individual slides in .jpg or .gif
graphic formats and can be printed or downloaded by the user. In that way the
lecturer can easily modify the on-line material and adapt it to the answer of
the students by editing only the adequate slide. This material appears at the
Internet address:

The possibility of access in a more interactive way to the auto-evaluation and
numerical exercises will be implemented in the future.
