"The Right to an Education" |
|
The Pro yecto Educacion Maya (Education
Project of Maya Children in Guatemala or P.E.M.) sponsors
the entire school education (primary and secondary school) of
15-20 Indigenous children in the small village of San Antonio
Aguas Calientes near La Antigua Guatemala in Guatemala, Central
America.
P.E.M. is a non-profit organization* which helps Guatemalan
children attain their "Right to an Education" by paying
for their schooling with the help of private donations. Child
labor and illiteracy (the world's third highest) undermine the
lives of Indigenous children whose parents cannot afford the school
fees.
P.E.M.
grew out of a long-standing friendship between the Indigenous
people of San Antonio Aguas Calientes and several Europeans and
North Americans.
The smooth functioning of P.E.M. since its
foundation in December 1993 has been possible due to the intense
cooperation between the project families in Guatemala and P.E.M.'s
representatives in the United States and Germany.
San
Antonio parents run the project locally under the guidance of
P.E.M.'s president Cesar Lopez, family father and artisan
from San Antonio.
Representatives abroad do the
fund-raising, send regular newsletters, facilitate letter exchanges
between the children and their godparents and visit P.E.M. in
Guatemala on a yearly basis.
*
In October of 1995 P.E.M. received its official 501c3 non-profit
organization status; thus all donations are tax deductible.

If you would like to commit yourself to the education of a child from San Antonio Aguas Calientes for several years and be involved in a regular letter exchange you may choose to become a godparent. Otherwise you may wish to contribute to the general school fund of P.E.M. by making a donation. Please make all donations payable to "Proyecto Educacion Maya" and send them to Catherine Reinhardt-Zacair, founder and representative of P.E.M.:
