Dipping hard-cooked eggs into commercial Easter egg dye is always fun for young children. For a creative touch, before dyeing help your child attach thin strips of masking tape to the eggs or wrap rubber bands around them. Dip the eggs into the dye until they are the desired shade and allow them to dry completely. Then remove the masking tape or rubber bands to reveal unique white patterns. If you like, you can dye the eggs again in a contrasting color.

Easter Pocketchart Activity- Submitted by Sherry

This is Chocolate Bunny happy.
This is Chocolate Bunny sad.
This is Chocolate Bunny sleepy.
This is Chocolate Bunny mad.
This is Chocolate Bunny in pieces small,
But in my tummy hes best of all.

To use it in the pocketchart, you write each line of the poem on a sentence strip and place it in the chart. In front of the sentence, put a picture matching the sentence strip. You can utilize clip art pictures, or draw them yourself.

After repeated rereadings, the students will be able to read or recite the poem on their own. I also make a second set of sentence strips for the poem and cut apart the individual words. The students can then have practice in matching the words. I use two different color sentence strips, alternating the colors in the text. For instance, if the sentence This is Chocolate Bunny happy. is in pink, then this same sentence in the second set of sentence strips would be pink. The next sentence This is Choloclate Bunny sad. would be in green in both sets of sentence strips. This helps to narrow down the choices the students have to choose from when matching the text. You could use nice Easter colors for the sentence strips if you have them such as pink, green, yellow, blue.

Easter Take-Home Activity- Submitted by Sherry

Send an egg pattern photocopied onto cardstock or white construction paper home with each student. The student and their family works together to decorate their egg using whatever materials they have on hand. Once the eggs are returned back to school, they can be used to decorate a bulletin board or displayed in the hallway. Everytime Ive ever sent home a project like this, Im amazed at the creativity that is used in decorating the item.

Easter Bulletin Board

To use the decorated eggs from above for a bulletin board, you could display them as being hidden in 3D grass. Cover the lower part of a bulletin board in green paper (grass), the top half in light blue (sky). Add sprigs of 3D grass by cutting strips or clumps of grass from more green bulletin board paper and stapling it to the grass already on the bulletin board. Add a big Easter bunny, flowers, a sun and maybe some butterflies, along with the students eggs hidden in the grass. Possible caption: Hippity, Hoppity, Easters On Its Way!

You could also display their eggs in a HUGE basket on a bulletin board. Pile the eggs in the basket with some scattered around the bottom of the basket. You could even use real Easter basket grass to glue around the top of the basket like its stuffed and falling out.

Show Me the Bunny!- Submitted by Sherry

1 egg, pushpin, egg carton, pipe cleaner, glue stick, 2 small pom-poms, googly eyes, marker

Although a hard-boiled egg could work here, a blown egg produces a less top- heavy critter. Shake the egg to break the yolk. Use a pushpin to pierce a hole at both ends of the egg and blow (don't inhale!) the insides out. Cut a cup from an egg carton, trim it to make four legs, and cut out the bottom. Cut two ears from the egg carton and hold them in place with the pipe cleaner, wrapping it around the egg. Place the egg on the four-legged stand, threading the pipe cleaner ends down through the center hole and then wrapping them around the rear legs. Glue a pom-pom nose and tail over the pierced holes in the egg. Glue two googly eyes above the nose and draw a mouth below it.

Glue the pin slightly to the top of center on the back and allow all to dry thoroughly.

Easter Egg Ornament- Submitted by Sherry

Easter egg (Paper mache or plastic Easter egg shape), .Paint, color of your choice, Thick craft glue, Small trims of your choice (lace, ribbon, Pearl string etc.)

If using paper mache or clear plastic egg shapes the Easter eggs need to be colored. For paper mache paint, pearlized paints give a richer look. For clear plastic, paint the inside of the egg. If you are using the fallible colored eggs the softer pastels work better in this application and do not need to be painted. If using paint allow to dry thoroughly before going to the next step.

Using thick craft glue, glue a piece of trim vertically around the egg beginning and ending at the top or narrowest end. With a second piece of trim glue a horizontal band around the center (on the eggs that separate use the trim to cover the seam whether horizontal or vertical). Add lace appliqu, small flowers or other trim at the crossing of the two bands on the front side of the egg. Make a ribbon hanger by tying the two ends together and gluing the knot to the top of the egg. Add a small bow with streamers or other trim at the top to cover the knot.

Giant Easter Eggs- Submitted by Sherry

Balloon, Liquid Starch or Watered Down Glue, Large Paintbrushes, Crochet Thread

Blow up a balloon and tie a 2 ft. piece of thread to the bottom of it. Cover the entire balloon with starch or watered down glue, using a large paint brush. Wrap crochet thread around the balloon in one direction, leaving small gaps about 1/2 inch wide so the balloon isn't completely covered. Wrapping doesn't have to be perfect. Apply another light layer of starch or glue on top of the thread and wrap with another layer of crochet thread in another direction.

Repeat one or more times until the balloon is covered with thread. Hang the balloon from the bottom thread to dry for about 24 hours. When fully dry, pop the balloon and gently pull it out of the thread. Hang the giant egg from the ceiling or place it in a giant easter basket. Variations: Use multicolored thread or yarn. You can flatten the end of the egg by pressing on it gently so it will stand on end. Leave an intentional opening to set figurines and eggs/candy in. They are very pretty this way. Practical tips: Work quickly before the glue/starch dries or add more when necessary. Handle the egg with care after it dries, as it may cave in if you squish it.

Easter Wreath- Submitted by Patrisha

The Easter Wreath is an easy-to-make decoration for the front door or to place on the table as a centerpiece. Use a Styrofoam wreath and cover it with paper twist (both items are available in craft stores). Secure the paper twist to the Styrofoam with wire fastener, floral pins or hot glue. Pinch and pick the paper twist to form loops that cover the wreath. Secure the loops with the floral pins. Make a bow at the bottom of the wreath and secure with floral pins and hot glue. Inside the bottom part of your wreath, hot glue some Spanish Moss (available at craft stores). Among the moss, nestle two to three Marshmallow Peeps , securing their positions with hot glue. Hang from a door and let the glue set for several hours. If you plan to hang it outside and dont want to attract bugs, spray the Marshmallow Peeps with aerosol hair spray.

The second idea for a wreath is to use a Styrofoam wreath and cover it with paper twist. This wreath could hang or sit flat on a table top or credenza. Place small grapevine wreaths around the larger wreath (its laying flat). Secure the grapevine wreaths with hot glue. Top each with Spanish Moss and Marshmallow Peeps . Secure all with hot glue. Fill in the empty areas with paper twist bows and loops that are secured with floral pins and hot glue.

Awesome Easter Egg Mobile- Submitted by Patrisha

Craft Project Directions: To make this craft project you will need colored construction paper, scissors, tape, glue, crayons, craft sticks or small wooden dowels, string or ribbon, and other materials to decorate your Easter eggs. Next create your mobile structure. To begin, take two wooden dowels and cross them to form a cross and secure them with tape or string. Or if you have craft sticks, tape them together end to end to create longer sticks and then cross them. This will be the mobile structure from which you hang your paper Easter eggs.

First create your incredibly neat paper Easter Eggs. To make them you will need colored construction paper, scissors, tape, glue, crayons, and other materials to decorate your Easter eggs. To begin select all different colors of construction to create your Easter eggs. Each Easter egg will be made from four paper strips of different colors. You could also use the same colors- whatever you wish! First take a piece of colored construction paper, hold it horizontally, and cut strips about 1/2 inch wide. Next cut these strips in half. Repeat with other colors of paper. Now take each of these strips of paper and cut the ends of the strips with your scissors into points. Now you are ready to create your Easter eggs.

Take two colorful strips and attach the pointed ends together with tape or glue to form a bowed oval shape. Now attach another paper strip to the two you just attached together at the intersection of the points. Add a fourth paper strip to complete the egg. Use the picture as a guide. Now you have a fabulous Easter egg! Decorate it further with markers, crayons, glitter, and more. Add scriptures to each egg or special Easter messages.

Assemble your Easter eggs using the project directions above and let them dry. Next attach a piece of string or ribbon to each egg. Tie the other end of the ribbon to the mobile structure. Add many Easter eggs to the mobile until it is really festive and colorful!

Easter Pot Bunny- Submitted by Sherry

(We used the cardboard potting pots instead of the terra cotta pots...easier for the kids to use and cheaper!! We also used tacky glue instead of hot glue for the same reason. We were also able to poke holes in the top to stick the ears in since we used the cardboard pots)

This would make a cute decoration on your table this Easter. If you make the Easter Bunny small, you could make several and use as place settings with the person's name painted on the bunny.

2 Terracotta Pots (any 2 of same size), White Gesso, Gold glitter craft paint, Paint brush, White felt, Pink felt, Scissors, 2 Small wiggle eyes, Hot glue or tacky glue, Pink ribbon, 1 Tiny pink pom pom, 3 White pom poms (at least double the size of the pink pom pom), 2 Small silk rose buds, Wire cutters

Base coat the two terra cotta pots with white Gesso. Let dry. Glue the terracotta pots together. Cut a piece of ribbon to fit around the middle of the bunny. Glue in place. Tie a bow with another piece of ribbon and glue on. Add gold glitter craft paint on center of bow. Glue white pom poms on right above ribbon. Glue pink pom pom above and right between white pom poms. Glue on wiggle eyes. Cut out ears out of white felt. Cut ears a bit smaller out of pink felt. Glue together. Glue ears on top of the bunny. Cut the stems off the rosettes with the wire cutters. Glue a ribbon rosette in front and in back of ears. Glue bunny tail on the back of bunny, about 1/2 way up the bottom pot. Let dry

Easter Hats- Submitted by Lorenna

For each hat, I took two paperplates and glued around the outside, then cut a whole the irght size--you'll see in a minute. We had styrphome bowls from the dollar store, that were just the right shape and xize. They fit through the hole just right. We covered (wrapped) the plate ring in tissue paper of coice, then the bowl in wrapping paper, but you could use what you have. We got pretty floral paper and multi colored tissue paper packs at the dollar store. Then glued around edge of bowl and fit it through the plate and stapled. Then we poked a hole and put ribbon through it ($ store again) for holding it on head or hanging up. Then we decorated with ribbons and flowers from the dollar store and beautiful butterflies from the dollar store as well. You could completely fill the bowl part of the hat with little flowers or just arrange them around edges...they look really cute and even wearable too.
