Electrical Gremlins By Chuck Melton
On Saturday, June 2nd, PCNC hosted the next event in the Open Garage Series. Held at Walter Villeres Shop, The Sticky Folks, in San Rafael, the goal for this event was to chase down electrical problems and to install the Moseley Relay Panel. This panel comes complete, and will isolate the dash switches from the headlights and radiator fans.
Walter took the time to autograph the parking lot with his Euro-GTS, seen to the right.
8 Panteras (a collection of Mustangs, and a series 1 Jag) and more than 25 people attended for some electrical work, the bar-b-que, or just to socialize. Socializers include, Jim Seiferling and his wife, seen knitting much of the day, and Nancy & Mike Haney (That is how they signed the attendee list). Walter (host) was joined by his wife, and their donut-eating dog. Gary Glenn brought his orange MEEN CAT, and Lee Hinkley arrived in his GT4. Ed Kornegay, Charlie and Karen Puckett, and Tracy Heald also attended the event and to support the PCNC track committee meeting during the lunch break.

Three cars at a time filled the work bays, one bay contains a full height lift. Marcus Smith used the lift to solve a speedometer cable problem, and Bill Santos fixed an exhaust leak.
Michael Conwell drove 150 miles to the event, to solve a taillight problem. It turns out that in the dimmer switch a bent lead shorted out.
The first panel, destined for the Phoenix, needed to be assembled before installing. Most people order the assembled version of the kit, and this is a GOOD idea. Assembly took us longer than we expected as we didnt have a wiring diagram ! While electrical guru Marcus Smith soldered the last few wires, I replaced some burned wire in the harness under the dash. On the way home from the Silver State race, the headlight switch burned up; this is a common failure, since all the headlight current flows through the switch. In this case, the wire from the switch to the relay, located near the drivers left foot, burned completely. Mangusta owner, Tom Galli mans the BBQ at the back of the image.
Next in line for the panel was Bill Santos. The panel is installed on the footbox wall, and the wires are routed through a factory access hole in the floor of the front trunk. Then the wire bundle is connected to the back of the fuse panel, while the main power line is attached to the load side of the amp meter. (An alternate method is to connect the main power supply directly to the battery. However the amp gauge will not reflect the load to the headlights and radiator fans if wired this way.)
