How I know What I know About Our Family Tree

When Grandma and I started this research twenty years ago, we went to the Cloverdale Library in Surrey, British Columbia that holds a HUGE geneology resource.  We recieved instruction from the librarians there on how to read and find Canadian Census Records in the 1800's.  They taught us about available resources, where to find them, how to order them and how to make sense out of them once we got them.  From those visits began our trip to find our family history.

I use at least THREE written sources of proof to determine that my information about our family is correct before I say "it is so."  Census record information, Bible information, Government birth, marriage and death and land record information for sure.  Sometimes I luck across other unexpected sources such as newspaper articles - stories, obituaries and such.  In most cases I have at least four and five articles of proof to support what is in this website.  There is too much for me to post on this site but if you have a need to see it let me know and I will send it along to you.

Living Information

It is truly an honor that my family has trusted me with their living information.  I am using the one hundred year rule before I post it.  My grandmother would have been one hundred years old this year so her information is now disclosed on this site.  However my living family tree information will always be protected by me and will never be made public to anyone.  I am hoping someone on our family will take up the torch when I am ready to pass it on and continue our story.  I am waiting for whoever it will be among our younger generation.  There will be a call from the ancestors and someone will step forward.

Our Common Ancestors

The family of Catharine (Kitty) Galsworthy and Thomas Prout is the ancestor we all have in common as Portage Prout descendants.  Most of the updated information was kindly donated by the descendants of Elizabeth Prout Knott and her brother Richard.  Many thanks to Ruby Jean , Alice and Evelyn .  Evelyn, your kindness toward us - the descendants of John and Eva Prout at the last reunion will never be forgotten.  She went out of her way to track down, purchase and then give us all seed packages that were right from our father/grandfather/great grandfather's seed store at the reunion in Alberta.

We were luckier than most to have had early Thomas and Emmeline Prout history being taken down by Hilda, wife of Tom who was the son of  Norman and Gladys Weber.  Gladys was Marion Gladys Prout - daughter of Thomas and Emmeline.  Hilda told me that when she married into the Prout family there were so many faces she had been introduced to the only way she could keep everyone straight was to "write it down to keep them sorted out!"  So began the history taking of our branch of this Prout family tree.

Eva and John's tree was fairly easy to collect as this family had always remained close.  Time put distance between the siblings of the brothers and sisters but there are many of us that still maintain contact and exchange news.   I am fortunate that I can still turn to my great-Aunt Phyllis Prout via Linda to "tweak" her memory about her parent's family.  Thank you Linda!

It is my intention to only publish true information on this site.  Someone wrote and challenged the story of my great-grandfather and his movie theater.  I am satisfied that the story is true.  He owned and operated the very first theater in Portage and managed several others over time.  Managed meant when the owner left he was the one in charge!

This is a site about stories but it is not a site about my own personal ones.  It is the story of my Portage La Prairie Prout Family Tree.  It is documented and I hope you enjoy your visit to my family friendly site.
