Road To Nowhere Chapter 13: The Way You Do

"Hey Dan!" Chelsea said cornering him after the last bell had rung.

"Um, hi Chelsea," Dan said walking toward his locker.

Chelsea followed him. "So Dan. How's it going?"

"Pretty good. Thanks for asking," Dan said trying to remember what books he needed to take home with him.

"No problem. Hey, did you understand that chemistry homework?" Chelsea asked, her excitement bubbling over.

"Yeah, most of it. It was kinda confusing though," Dan said as he shut his locker.

"Oh yeah, me too. Confusing," Chelsea said distractedly.

"Um, well, I gotta catch my bus now," Dan said starting to walk off.

"Oh yeah, so do I," Chelsea paused as if debating over something. "Here's my number. Call me sometime."

"Uh, okay. Bye," Dan said walking away as fast as he could.

Chelsea smiled to herself. "Damn, he has a nice ass," she said quietly as she turned around.

"Who has a nice ass?" Courtney asked her.

"Um, no one," Chelsea muttered trying to get around Courtney.

"Chelsea, I saw you talking to Dan," Courtney said not letting her get out of it.

"Yeah so? Is it a crime to talk to the new guy?" Chelsea asked apprehensively.

"If you like the guy, just tell me!" Courtney said, her voice rising.

"Why do you care? It's not like you're actually gonna get with him," Chelsea stared her best friend down.

"Why wouldn't I get with him?" Courtney's fist clenched.

"Because I know you, Courtney Evans. You will let him fall head over heels in love with you and then you will break his heart. You'll dump him faster than last year's Ralph Lauren purse," Chelsea laughed mockingly at her friend.

"Are you sure you want to start with me, Chelsea Clark?" Courtney asked angered that her so-called best friend had said such horrible thing to her face.

"Courtney, you are not going to fight me," Chelsea walked away laughing like a maniac.

"Just you wait and see," Courtney said aloud. "Why doesn't anyone think that I can do it? Am I really that shallow?"

A slamming of lockers, laughs and screams, and shuffling of feet was her reply.

Courtney threw her purse onto her bed and went into her closet to find a more comfortable outfit. She decided on a pair of flowered capris and yellow tank top. After she had changed she fell into a chair by the window. She sighed. Nobody understood the way she was starting to fall for Dan. He reminded her of when her world was perfect, when everything was right in her life.

She decided to call him. He had slipped his number into he purse sometime before lunch. She smiled when she unfolded the notebook paper. Carefully, she dialed his number and let it ring.

"Hello?" she heard his voice answer.

"Hey Dan," Courtney cooed into the receiver.

"Courtney, it's good to hear your voice," Dan said relieved it was her.

"Nice to know someone feels something good toward me," Courtney said.

"Are you and Matt still fighting?" Dan asked.

"Yeah. He just doesn't want to believe that I can make my own decisions," Courtney said.

"Yeah, Chelsea like gave me her number after school today," Dan said, not sure if he should say anything.

Courtney tensed up at the mention of Chelsea. "Yeah, I saw you guys talking," she said trying not to let her voice reveal her emotions.

"Yeah, she was acting kinda weird," Dan brushed the subject off. "So anyways, have you picked out a dress for homecoming yet?"

"Nope, I still need to go shopping. Hey, do you want to join me?" Courtney asked. "We could spend all kinds of my dad's money and both buy new outfits."

"Are you sure your dad wouldn't mind?" Dan asked uncertainly.

"Dude, what he doesn't know won't hurt him," Courtney laughed to assure Dan that everything was cool.

"Okay then. We probably should go tonight since tomorrow is game day and Saturday is the dance," Dan said getting excited.

"Then let's go!" Courtney said catching his enthusiasm. "I'll pick you up in a few."

They hung up and Courtney dashed out the door. She pulled up in front of Dan's house to find him waiting for her. He got in and she sped away toward the mall.

"Black would look really good on you," Courtney said to Dan.

"Hmm, sounds good to me," Dan agreed. "What color are you going to wear?"

"How about I wear white and you wear black? That would look cool," Courtney said as she found a parking space.

"Cool," Dan said as they got out of the car.

Courtney led Dan to a huge department store and into the clothing sections. She picked up a black sweater and pants to match. She thrust them into his hands. "Here, go try these on!"

Dan found a dressing room and tried on the outfit. He loved it. It felt so right on his body and he looked really good. He opened the door to show Courtney.

"Damn," she said. "That looks tight!"

"Yeah, it does look pretty good. Why don't you go find something and I'll catch up?" Dan said as he went back into the dressing room.

He put his regular clothes back on and found Courtney looking at skirts. She held up a short beige colored skirt. He checked it out.

"That is so cute, Court!" he admired her.

"You think so?" Courtney asked as she looked through the racks of clothes for a sweater to match her skirt. She came across a cream colored turtleneck sweater that matched perfectly.

"What do you think?" she asked Dan holding the outfit against her body

"I like," Dan replied.

Courtney tried the outfit on and decided to buy it. They went up to the counter and charged the two outfits to Courtney's dad's credit card. They walked out of the mall and back to Courtney's car.

"That was fun," Courtney said.

"Yeah," Dan agreed. "I can't wait until the dance."
