LINER NOTES:
The Best of What's Around - like Dancing Nancies,
this song has sort of fallen
off the face of the Earth over the last year
or two. However, it's still an
awesome song and when used as an opener like
it used to be, it sets a totally
different tone for the concert, and sets the
tone of disc 3. This was the only
time it was used as an opener in 1999, and even
though Dave misses the first
few words, he makes up for it during the groove
at the end.
Lover Lay Down - the first sign that you're going
to hear this song is when Boyd
walks off the stage. Usually it catches
you off guard, sets a tone, and leads
into happy dance song. The sweetest of the 1999
versions, it leads into...
The Song That Jane Likes - a truly unique version,
Dave breaks a string during
the introduction, Carter and Stefan lay down
a groove that sends Dave dancing
and laughing to the back of the stage to get
his new guitar.
Say Goodbye - "here we are, ah under the stars,
we'll listen to our hearts roar,
and tomorrow we'll make this connection, only
with each other, only
recollection." Carter kinda misses a major
downbeat at the end of the song, but
the typically altered lyrics are atypically
beautiful.
Recently - unfortunately the entire first half
of the tour we were treated to a
truncated three minute of this song. Starting
at Milwaukee, however, they began
to play it out. This is, I believe, the
only played out version of this song
from the Summer that includes the Some Do/Some
Don't intro.
For the Beauty of Wynona - only played three times
all tour, this is the one
song of this tour that Mitch Rutman leaves his
tater tots and hamburgers and
joins the band. He's a hell of a player
and it's a good tradition to bring him
up and a play a song each tour. An especially
haunting version that would
remind you of Tim Reynolds if you didn't know
better.
The Dreaming Tree - brought back at the Gorge,
it was one of those songs along
with Angel that the band brought in mid tour
in order to give them a few more
options. A long version of this song gives
them a chance to show their talents,
and the lack of the screaming that would occur
during a single gives you a
chance to relish their musicianship.
Love of My Life - grammy award nominated song
debuted the same night as John the
Revelator is believed to be the trade off as
Santana got this, and DMB got John.
This version is from the DMB 1999 year end award
winning Giants Stadium, and all
the guests again make this smoke at the end juxtaposed
with the beauty of the
beginning.
Pig - I had the hardest time picking a version
of this over any other song.
This song was somewhat rare early in the tour
after it all but disappeared in
1998 from June on. When June began this
year, they played at least once at
every venue in June from Pennsylvania to Wisconsin.
Certain things make this
song hard to pick. Carter began to rip
up the end jam in mid June, but due to
the intensity, Boyd would have a tendency to
go out of tune, and the end jam
would really sound "off." In this version,
Boyd does go slightly flat once
during the tune and a smidgeon at the end.
However, Carter is absolutely at
his best, and Dave improvs near the end of the
jam after a long lay off, which
is the first and only time I've ever heard that.
Like DIDO on disc 1, learn the
mumbles, turn it up and scream with him, and
try not to pull a neck muscle
jamming with the downbeats.
