| The Dragon Soul weyr was filling up. There were dignitaries from everywhere that the pair of Dawnlight folks had ever heard about, and lots more from elsewhere. It was a nice while before anyone realized that some bottles of wine had been missing -- no one found out until Marishi-Ten had long since drank the sweet liquid. She tried sharing it with brown Silky, the still-young flitter they'd found. But he didn't seem to like the wine at all. Green Malica however seemed to like getting into the same kind of trouble that her bonded Hajimi did. Particularly, smelly things. But that didn't seem to matter to Hajimi of course. She finally got into a big pot of tar, and it took Hajimi the better part of an afternoon to clean her. It was an evening not so long after that, when the dragons started humming, signalling the start of the long-awaited last hatching. There was a huge rush to the sands, but the people around had a sort of half-solemn half-amazed feel. This was a huge hatching, three queens sharing the sands -- but it was also Dragon Soul's last. When everyone had arrived, they only waited a little while before the dragons stopped their loud humming, and the first egg hatched. It showed off a beautiful small gold - who bonded almost right off! A gold to start! All of a sudden, two bronzes broke out of their shells. One was just a bit bigger than the other, and he sped directly over to Hajimi! Hajimi! I am strong and sure! I will keep you out of trouble! Suddenly, feeling the presence of the new dragon's mind in his own, Hajimi laughed out loud. It was unlike anything he'd ever experienced, just a bit like his bonding to green Malica, but not. "You can try, Talisanith!" he said, aware that MarishiTen would be typically stubborn about things, so he didn't say a word about her slinking around in the shadows. They went to the meat bowls and tried not to gorge. MarishiTen on the other hand had watched her husband's antics. Perhaps he was enjoying himself or maybe he was just enthralled with what-was-his-name? Talisanith? Hmp. She kicked around in the dusty area below the stands, as people cheered on the new hatchlings and their bonds. Something odd apparently happened at least once or twice, but by the time MarishiTen looked they were already walking away and too hard to see. Finally she re-entered the clumps of candidates and watched with a bit more enthusiasm. There were lots of people and eggs left. However, there were more people than eggs. That wasn't good. Not at all. But she was just a thief after all. She knew it deep down. People complimented her looks or her wit, but sometimes they looked at her like she was... scum. The brown firelizard on her shoulder squawked at her memories, finding them annoying. Maybe it wouldn't be her time here. After all, Hajimi had bonded right off. Maybe there wasn't a dragon. Well. There were still eggs. Bunches of them. Not every one's eyes were on the eggs -- they were on the hatchings! They were watching the new pairs walk off the sands. They were busy recording things, and chatting and betting with one another in the stands. So. There was an egg she'd been looking at. It was a big one, golden hued. When she had just about reached the edge of the sands, holding the egg in her arms, standing alone near that end of the sands, the egg began to hatch! MarishiTen gasped and groaned inside. People looked right at her as the sound of a sharp CRACK showed everyone where the next hatching was going to occur. The shell dissolved into a bunch of powdery pieces, as the hatchling was left in her arms. No one dared even ask what she'd been doing -- stealing an egg! -- when they saw the gold turn her eyes to MarishiTen's and obviously bond. You know, I would have chosen you whether we were alone or not, MarishiTen. She put the dragoness down, and gulped. So she really had been worthy of a dragon? A ... a gold? At last, Marishi said, "Oh. Sorry, Erinquath." She saw how Ireath looked at them as they went to the meat and their partners. They'd be a pair all right. |
