Why are these (mostly) in monochrome? Because Sargent told me not to paint watercolors in color.
Ah, well...we'll let that pass. No, seriously, it is easier for me to carry around a single pot of color, a brush, and some papers on a clipboard. Water I can get from anywhere. What I need to capture is the first impression of form, colors are less important on such ventures. Thus happened "Quick-Sketch", a watercolor monochrome of my aunt in less than a minute. The outcome was hugely satisfying as far as I was concerned - she was not posing for me, wasn't even aware that she was on the line of fire. She was just looking closely at something on the mantelpiece when I drew her.
Same with the ones drawn from TV, which is such a huge repertoire of fleeting images and an integral part of our daily life. TVs build who we are, and even if we are unable to form a consistent opinion on an issue - bombarded with myriads of conflicting news and views as we often are, some faces do stick above the din, staying etched in our consciousness, long after any reference to the original is lost. The image, at least to the artist, is all that matters then - not the story lurking behind, if there at all is one.Heads 1 and 2 are products of such subconscious presences, mechanically rendered on paper.
The Saltora goats, Monkey mom and Slippers owe gratitude to the kind hospitality of a close friend(a prosthdontist posted to a remote health-center, and unable to part company with me even though I have left the clinical world far behind!)and his very kind wife - who, incidentally is a fabulous cook!
