Studying Zorn...
After Degas and Sargent(not in any
order of priority) Anders Zorn is one of the greatest wielders
of the painting brush - as far as drawing with the brush
is concerned. Yet he is not very well known outside Sweden. As an etcher,
Zorn is almost unparalled - only Rembrandt comes to my mind on a similar
context. Even though Zorn's popularity now mostly rests on his nudes -
earthy, normal women standing by the brook, leaning on sand banks, taking
a shower or sauna, or dually lit by light coming from the window and the
fireplace, he was also in constant demand as a portraitist. His watercolors
- those ripple effects in mid-day sun are amazingly bold and skillfull.
When I first saw his works I could only stare open-mouthed at his versatility.
