Studying Renoir...

Renoir is a revelation! I fail to comprehend the source of his endless zest for life. He loved to paint nudes, but not those distant, shrivelled or "fashionable" kind - but women as they are, often plump and warm and lovable. The next-door girl you would feel comfortable with.

While still a student, renoir was ridiculed for not having enough skill(supposedly!) to pursue a career in painting. Fortunately for us, to this fun-filled master the darker things in life were like water on a duck's feather. He continued to paint in the only way he knew - broad flashy stokes with occasional daubs(interrupted by a brief period of hard-edged style), right upto his advanced arthritis-afflicted age. It is said that right before his death Renoir expressed satisfaction that he is finally begining to understand colors!
