My friend K flew to LA for work and spent the day with me at the Getty Villa and the Getty Center! We went the villa to see Greek Statues, because after all we are goddesses. RMB
The Getty Villa is really pretty and in Malibu overlooking the ocean. The Villa features Greek, Roman, and Etruscan antiquities arranged by themes including Gods and Goddesses, Dionysos and the Theater, and Stories of the Trojan War.
See we make lovely greek goddess statues.
Dionysus and his bacchantes, K and me. RMB
Musing with a muse.
K out on the balcony overlooking the villa.
The villa's beautiful stage.
The majority of Greek and south Italian vases were made for uses related to wine. Therefore, many of them were appropriately decorated w/ compositions that depicted the wine god Dionysos, as well as revels in his honor.
Theater Scene Mosaic
floor from a house near Hadrumetum Roman, A.D. 200-300
Band-cup w/ Dionysiac Revelers. c. 530 BC
Bell-krater w/ an old Silene followed by the young Dionysos. c.350-325 BC
This theater mask mosaic decorated the threshold to a room. The masks represent typical comic characters.
Now since you know me and know that I often like to be silly and don't always act my age, the next set of pics should not surpise you. When K and I got together we got extra silly!! College theater friends tend to bring out silliness. Luckily, the Getty is a family museum and has lots of activities for kids of all ages.
Yes, this is us in the kids activity part of the villa. K was drawing lovely designs on a pot and I am rubbing images on to a pot. Aren't we lovely artists.
There was this shadowbox theater where you could put on hats and use weapons to pose.
Then we went to the Getty Center to look at all the cool art and antique furniture. The gardens at the Getty have a beautiful view of LA and Santa Monica. The Getty has a number of exhibits that change, but I like the permament collection best.
The Getty is located up on the hill so you have to take a tram to get up there.
Just for fun, I included a pic of the 405 traffic late at night from the center. See that almost solid strip of light? That is rush hour not moving.
The fountain looks really pretty lit up at night.
When we went this was in the main hall. What is it? An Uberorgan. It is the huge crazy musical thing by Tim Hawkinson. If you want to see a video of it in action, click here. or here.
I love fancy old style beds. These are my favorite ones on display at the Getty.
French, about 1750
French, about 1775-1780
This Chandelier by Grard-Jean Galle is my favorite piece. It's from early 1800s and the glass base is fish bowl. They use to keep fish in it.
Now the kids part of the Getty had a bed similar to my fav bed above. So eventhough we were the oldest kids there we climbed into the reading corner that was made to look like my fav bed.
Martin met us later for dinner and ferris wheel riding on the pier. I think everyone who comes to visit us takes a whirl on the ferris wheel. (except for my dad)
Then of course we had to make pretty theater masks to blend in to the crowds.
