Over time my awareness grew and my thoughts turned to the prophet. Here He was selflessly devoted to teaching me His ways without any care for payment or reverence. Knowing as we all do the selfishness of people in general, it began to worry me that He might have an agenda I knew nothing of, and so I decided to probe for a little more information about this mysterious prophet.
So that morning while we dried on the beach from our bathing I asked
"What is enlightnement?"
He thought for a moment and then without taking his eyes from the sea replied "When hungry, eat. when tired, sleep."
"What is the search for truth?" I continued undaunted
"The search for truth is a river"
"So what then is truth?" I tried again
"Truth is the mouth of the river" He replied reaching over to his bag and removing 2 glasses
"So exactly how does enlightenment help people?" I pushed
"It gets them to where they can't ask any more questions" He responded while removing his water bottle from his bag.
Sensing his change in mood I pushed on further "So what happens to an enlightened person after death?"
"How should I know" He replied pouring himself a glass of water
"Because you are enlightened"
"That is true. But I am not dead" He replied beginning to pour a glass for me
"Then how do you know that your enlightenment makes any difference?" I asked taking hold of the glass as the water reached the brim. But to my surprise He continued to look directly at the glass but seemed not to notice the liquid spilling over the top and down across my hand.
"Stop!" I said "It's full. You can't get anymore in!"
Finally when the bottle was empty He raised His eyes to mine and said
"How can I teach you enlightenment, unless you first empty your cup?"
