Freedom from the Law

I desire mercy and not sacrifice, the spirit of the Word not the ceremony. I have set my chldren free from the law, but many continue in its ways. It is easy to live by rules which are set down and immovable and to repent when they are broken. Rules provide an easy way to make life regular and unchangeable. But this is not my purpose for you. You should learn to break those chains that tie you to the law and to then walk in the freedom of the Spirit.

Murder is wrong not because there is a commandment against it but because murder is contrary to love. One who loves will not murder, take another's possessions, lie, nor commit adultery. One who walks in the freedom which love gives will naturally do what is right and need not consider what the law lays down.

He who walks in love becomes free to live a life that is abundant, having a reason for his actions. Law itself is not a reason for morality, nor does it allow for freedom. When the unbeliever asks why it is wrong to commit adultery, one cannot answer that it is simply wrong, but one can tell about the higher purpose of man: to love God and to love one's neighbor as oneself.
