Families and the Modern World

Each day is full of distractions in the developed world: video games, tv, email, the internet, telephone, radio. All these things try to get your attention. Many families spend hours in front of the television, watching other people live lives that are neither real nor realistic. And then one day, when the children leave home, each member can only regret that their lives had not been more as one in an actual sense with all the others.

Fathers, train your children, not only in what you believe but in everything. Do not let the media teach them for you. Children need to build and create and learn, not to become spectators of an unreal world. Not every activity must be for learning, but every activity should bring you all together.

Mothers, do not neglect your children's needs. Every hug and every kind word is as a treasure stored up in heaven that will be carried with your children throughout their lives. Do not complain and whine, but assist and guide positively. You can give them confidence to live in a troubled world.

You have read, "Spare the rod and spoil the child," but there are infractions of rules, misdemeanors and felonies. When you punish a child, punish only in love. Let the punishment be no worse than the crime, for punishment is meant to teach not to hurt. Does a child who has spilled his milk deserve to be hit? Parents, learn to control yourselves. The punishment you give is the lesson you give to your child. If you want your child to learn to love and forgive and to learn patience, then show your child through your example. Do not teach them through your actions that might makes right.
