Cigarette Burns: our movie review

Well, it has been a while since this column has been penned and we have had a the opportunity to view several films.  This installment will include a collection of new and old releases.  All are old favorites of mine.

Pearl Harbor 2001
The all star cast and visual effects of Brookhiemer make this a must see. I saw it the day it opened in the cinema and was impressed by the fact that it alluded to the USs responsibility in the provoked attack that left the Pacific Fleet in ruins and thousands dead.  The film itself  like Titanic was a historical event pumped full of romance to hold the viewer's attention.  The actual event lasted a little more than three hours and that is about how long the attack upon the synapses of the viewer is.  As far as history and special effects are concerned this is a must see.  Rent it on dvd tonight.

Starship Troopers 1997
The futuristic vision which Heinlein created in the book of the same name was only marginally butchered by Hollywood. Casper Van Dean, Denise Richards, and Doogie Howser round out the cast of this live action animie flick.  The effects are not bad and the back drop to the plot give the audience a view into a future where I would be completely happy.  The failure of democracy and the fact the human race is not the best thing going is the message that we all should heed and carry with us to our grave.

Fight Club 1999 This cinematic event is unparalleled in the annals of Hollywood film making.  This sadistic view into the mental instability of a society is represented by the inquisition of  Edward Nortons character by Brad Pitts desire to achieve economic equilibrium.  It challenges us all to look into the messages left by the Unabomber, Neitschze and Darwin.  If you reject the basic assumption of civilization especially the importance of material possessions, what then?  Watch it tonight with someone you love and let the liberator realign your perception.

Enemy at the Gates 2001
Yet another long winded historical film turned romance.  The story of two snipers, a love affair, the need for a hero and the career of a political commissar during the bloody battle of Stalingrad during World War II.  Ed Harris, Jude Law, Rachel Weis, and Joseph Fines and other notables make this an excellent cast. The visuals were better than Pearl Harbor.  The historical accuracy surpasses that of any other film to be made about this tragic episode in human history.  Not recommend for the weak at heart or stomach.
