| Gene Joke Cyclists were meant to be run over Now that the hazy, hot, and humid days of the summer are over, the cyclists are swarming. I dont have a problem with people enjoying themselves, or even those who use riding as an alternative transportation means. But...I could have sworn that in my drivers training manual from my youth, it states that cyclists must obey traffic laws. A person riding on a cycle must stop at stop signs, signal when they turn, and whatnot. Instead, what I see are people who feel some sort of carelessness because they are on a bike. They are worse than pedestrians. I cant tell you how many cyclists I have seen in the last week alone that have caused hazardous situations either towards themselves, or others. My question is: If I accidentally run over a cyclist, possibly killing them, because they were blatantly disregarding traffic laws to the point where the accident is unavoidable, am I at fault? This is the kind of reckless behavior I have witnessed recently, and not just by unsupervised children. Yes I do live by Cherokee park, Im forced to deal with this every time I get in my car. My stress levels raise considerably every time I see a cyclist. Im getting to the point where I want to just follow the traffic laws myself and stop caring about others negligence. Isnt it enough that I have to worry about other drivers, pedestrians, children, animals, and road hazards? Must I be mocked by disrespectful bike riders? A call to action for all cyclists who read this article: Follow the traffic laws, you are saving your own neck, because somewhere out there Im fed up and ready to run you over the next time you dont yield. |
