Archie Kao Q & A

Archie Kao is one of the hardest working guys in the biz - over the summer, he was busy on four continents: Africa (filming "The Hills Have Eyes II" in Morocco), Asia (various commercials), Europe (the MCM Expo in London with other "CSI" actors) and right here in North America, portraying audio-visual technician Archie Johnson on "CSI".

Archie is also one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet, and while his schedule didn't allow time for him to answer every single question that was submitted (and we thank all of you who participated), it's to his credit that he got to as many as he could, and we thank you for your time and generosity, Archie!

So, without further ado...

Diyana (chobitschii) of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia wants to know:

Do you speak other languages other than English? If yes, what are they?

well, i grew up in a bilingual household, speaking both english and mandarin chinese - but nowadays i can understand mandarin much better than i can speak it. i also studied french for six years, because i love the sound of that language, but tragically, haven't used it since i was in school...

Have you been to Malaysia before?

yes, i shot a commercial in kuala lumpur and i absolutely loved it...really a beautiful place with such harmony among the different races and cultures...it was a wonderful experience, and i'd love to go back.

How does it feel to work with Jerry Chan and fellow 'Fast Money' casts?

jerry chan is a real talent. i was thrilled he asked me to star in his short film, and look forward to developing other projects in the future...the rest of the cast was terrific to work with, in that everyone had the sense that we were in it for the sheer art of storytelling, and nobody had egos to check...

Are you close to John Cho (a Korean-American actor/lead singer of Left of Zed)?

i know john, and have been been a fan of his for a long time - and that's easy to do, because i think he's a terrific actor and a great guy as well.

Do you watch anime (Japanese animation) or read manga (something like anime only in comic form)? If yes, what's your favourite?

no, i don't - but i was in london in october last year, at an autograph signing convention that was heavy into anime...i never realized how huge anime was!

What is the meanest prank you ever pull?

wow, that's tough one...have to ask my sisters...

Kailey (OnigamiNanashi) from California, USA, asks
simply...

What was it like to go from Power Ranger, hero of the people and buff ninja extreme, to geeky lab rat? Not that the technician character is geeky in a bad way, but was there a change in mindset to the way you
approached work every day?

i guess i'd say kai chen is whole lot more uptight than archie johnson, but i like them both the same...

elanor_fields from New Jersey, USA, got out her journalist's notepad and pen and got serious...

First of all: let's just get the question over with. How do you looks so gorgeous all the time? Is there a secret beauty treatment or were you just born that handsome? xD

you are a very kind soul, and thank you for your generosity!

Is Archie Johnson going to have any romance in the future? Come on, the boy is locked up all by himself in that dark AV room. He needs a distraction in his life. =D last time I checked, Cath, Sara, Sofia, Wendy, Mandy, Jacqui, Judy, and many others are all free.

i know, he should! maybe he could show off some of his digital prowess for one (or all!) of the ladies - all in the name of science...

What is your favorite episode of CSI?

Well, "chaos theory" is special to me because it was the first episode i ever shot, but then i have to say working with quentin tarantino on "grave danger" was a thrill because i've been a fan of his from afar, so taking direction from him was kind of surreal.

What kind of girl "defrags your hard drive"? ^^

that's hilarious! i remember asking danny cannon, our writer/director of the episode, if he was really gonna have me say that line - and he said not if i really hated it - but then i thought i'd give it a whirl, and they'd edit it out because it seemed too corny - but it stayed in, and people are always quoting me that!

In "Fast Money", you don't play your typical sweet guy role. How did it feel to play an ambitious character?

i like playing "bad" guys - they have definite perspectives...

Do you ever miss your Power Rangers days? Come on, you know you looked good in that tight suit.

i had a great time on power rangers - it was like going trick-or-treating every day.

Kimber from Alabama, USA, thanks you for taking the time to do this for the fans, and wants to know...

Archie, what songs would be on the soundtrack to your life?

that is an awesome question - so much to put on that soundtrack, i'll have to get back to you on that :)

What does spirituality mean to you?

i think about this every day, and in summary, i remember wayne dyer saying that to the degree that you feel yourself connected to the world around you, as opposed to a "me vs. them" mentality, therein lies your spirituality...

Do you have any pets?

my 9 month old boy, cooper, is a golden retriever!

Rachel (SpireiteRachel) from Derbyshire, England, checks in with the following query...

If you could play any character in any TV show/film which would it be and why?

i think matt damon's role as jason bourne in that franchise has got be one of the greatest roles of modern cinema. the possibilities for that character are almost endless...
also, keanu reeves role as neo in the matrix trilogy is amazing - a metapyhsical luke skywalker. joseph campbell's the hero with a thousand faces is really an amazing work - he identifies the common threads in storytelling that have been told and retold for generations - and i would go so far as to say that with all of our modern advancements, humanity's needs and desires really haven't changed through the centuries - just the vehicles we transport them in...

Pookie from Singapore wants to know...

Just for the heck of it (and maybe just a lil for satisfying my curiosity), I would like to ask our beloved Archie if he had ever considered picking up
Chinese/Mandarin and if he knows which dialect group he belongs to.

I grew up speaking mandarin chinese as well as english, but honestly, my understanding of it now is quite rudimentary.

...and Robin (kat skahnne) from Los Angeles, California, USA, throws these onto the pile for dessert...

As you are someone who grew up elsewhere but came to California as an adult, it has to be asked: Ever been in an earthquake?

Within the first year of being in california, i had endured my first earthquake, flash flood alerts, forest wildfires, and LA riot/looting sprees. I just thought: "these californinans are anything but boring!"

And finally...why acting? (As opposed to, say, politics, IT, chartered accountancy, being a rock star, etc...)

When i first got here, i had no intention of being an actor. i was just taking in the new scenery. a customer that i waited on in the restaurant that i worked at asked me if i'd ever thought of doing commercials, and one thing led to another...but at that juncture of my life, i think if he'd asked me about going into software sales or something i probably would be closer to a real-life version of archie johnson than i actually am (i can hardly type!)

Again, MANY thanks to Archie for taking the time to answer the fans' questions, and to those fans who submitted questions. Think you'll all agree, he's a fascinating and talented guy!!
