What is a technical writer?
To answer the question self-referentially, a technical writer is a
person who writes technical documents, from articles for medical
journals to project specifications for machinery. Many are employed
in the software industry. There are no globally recognized
certifications for technical communication (as, for instance, Microsoft,
Novell, and other companies
offer to programmers and other information technology professionals),
technical writers generally have college degrees in English or
Communication, or they may have education in the fields in which they write.
What can a technical writer do?
Technical writers can describe how something works, or how to use it,
in a way that is easily understood. In addition to knowing how to use
good document organization skills, technical writers analyze the
target audience for a document, and write accordingly. For instance,
a medical journal article may use highly technical medical jargon,
assuming that the target audience-- physicians-- undertand medical
terminology. On the other hand, the online Help accompanying a tax
program marketed to individual return filers would not assume
knowledge of accounting jargon. Depending on the results of audience
analysis, the online Help may not even assume knowledge of basic
tasks performed on a computer, such as opening files and closing windows.
Why not let QA or Marketing write the documentation for our product
instead of hiring a technical writer?
In your organization, you hire people to do what they do best because
it's the most efficient way to get the best possible work. You do not
require your programmers to process their own payroll, or ask
accounting personnel to write design documentation, because neither
would do the job well or quickly. Similarly, to get the best
documentation written quickly enough to meet production deadlines,
the most cost-effective plan is to hire a technical writer to create
the documentation for your product.
If your organization does not need a full-time technical writer,
rather than asking another department to write documentation,
consider contracting with an independent technical writer. Pro-Logic
& Adjustable Choke works offsite, saving your company the expense
of providing a workstation, as well as employee benefits, Social
Security, and other costs associated with a full-time employee.
