PURIM AND LIFE GO TOGETHER SERIOUSLY Sherry Davison
We must fast. We must also do the equivalent of putting on sackcloth, sitting in ashes, remaining unshaven, sitting on low stools, and beating our breasts to beg for G-d's mercy. Have we forgotten our Babylonian captivity and the reason for it? We obviously have forgotten the fate of Sodom and Gomorrah, and G-d's first judgment of Nineveh. We have forgotten the doomed end of the Hittites, Philistines, Chaldeans, Moabites, and other ancient Middle Eastern peoples. We have forgotten the Tower of Babel, the Flood, the Serpent in the Garden of Eden, and the lessons that we needed to learn from all of them. We have forgotten how Jochebed felt as Pharaoh's soldiers looked for the infant Moses. We have forgotten what our Maccabees died for. We have forgotten the reason that G-d's angel called to Abraham just in time to spare Isaac's life. It is because child sacrifice always was and always will be forbidden by our G-d. Every Jewish mother who asks for, makes an appointment for, and pays money for the taking of her pre-born child's life----no matter at what stage of the child's development----is guilty of child sacrifice. Every Jewish abortionist is guilty of cooperating with that sacrificing. So is any rabbi who gives assent to abortion for his congregants. So is any Jewish organization that promotes the pro-choice mentality, which leads to abortion. Today, thousands who claim to be Jews are contributing in these ways to the destruction of our Jewish People. Our own flesh, one by one, is being slaughtered for sacrifice through abortion by ourselves every day, either directly or with our very own blessing, around the globe, wherever Jews dwell. How can any Jew, in good conscience, this year in 2003, really celebrate Purim? "Good Purim"? It is not yet so. Haman's selfishness and pride led to hate that was large enough for murder. We are not safe from individual similar actions, influence, or voting among our Jewish People yet. We have much work to do for our survival. Let us be brave enough to speak up for life as Queen Esther did. |
