Rally

Each year South Carolina Citizens for Life sponsors a Stand-Up for Life March and Rally. It is held in Columbia during the month of January. The march typically starts in front of the Russell House on Greene St. and ends at the front of the capital where there are speakers and music.

This years annual state Stand Up for Life March and Rally will be held on January 13, 2007 and featured pro-life speaker and abortion survivor Gianna Jessen. For more information click here. The march starts at 11:30 AM on Greene Street outside the Russell and continues up until the steps of the State House. Once at the Capital, there will be music and announcments as well as the featured speaker.

PLEASE COME TO THE RALLY AND SHOW YOU SUPPORT!

Last year's rally took place on January 21, 2006. The guest speaker was Susanne Schindler Vitadamo, sister of the late Terri Schiavo. For those unfamiliar with the Schiavo tragedy, Terri Schiavo was allowed to dehydrate to death at the request of her husband who claimed she would not have wanted to remain on a feeding tube following her brain injury. Susanne gave a moving speech about her sister's ordeal from the perspective of someone very close to the tragedy.

Some highlights from the speech were:
*The autopsy showed that Terri was neither bulimic nor had a heart attack. Rather it did show that she died from dehydration.
*Although, Terri's brain mass had shrunken to half its size at the time of the autopsy, there is no way of knowing whether this was due to her previous condition or the dehydration. And as she quoted Fr. Pavone, just because her brain was half its normal size, it did not make her half a person.
*Despite media reports of the autopsy confirming a persistant vegetative state (PVS), this was completely false. An autopsy cannot confirm or deny such a condition. PVS can only be diagnosed while a person is still alive and 50% of cases diagnosed as such are incorrect.
*40 medical professionals testified that Terri could have benefited from some form of therapy.
*Susanne and her family were rather dismayed that her local Catholic Bishop Lynch did not make a stand for Terri's sake, but was greatful for the support of Father Pavone, the many Catholic laity, and thousands of others throughout the nation who did.
