Sniping

Dragunov

If you get your hands on a Dragunov the sniping is very easy. You just hit the "alternate fire button" (backspace is default key at least in the European version) and you'll see the world through a telescopic sight. By using the zoom in/zoom out (Page Up/Page Down keys) you can center on the target. With the Dragunov you can kill guards and cameras at great distances. Before you start sniping you should be aware that you might set off the alarm.

If you for instance destroy a camera (or kill a guard) which is surveyed by another camera the alarm will go off. Furthermore destroying a camera causes obviously a minor earth quake (which you notice if you stand close to a camera and destroy it). Guards who are programmed to run to the closest alarm button when alerted will do so if you destroy a camera close to him. Check your map and click on the cameras to see where they are facing before starting sniping, see screenshot.

Other weapons

It is possible to kill guards at great distances using other weapons and binoculars, especially guards who are standing still. Beware, though, some of the guards are programmed to either run to a certain spot when they are "alarmed" or run to the nearest alarm button. If you're lucky you can take out a guard with a clean headshot, but that is quite rare. Anyway, this is how you snipe with binoculars;
  • Choose place where to shoot from. If you are trying to kill a sniper I recommend that you stand at a distance greater than 100 meters, since the sniper probaby will spot you when you start to injure him. If you're trying to take down a "regular" guard I've found that a distance greater than 50 meters is sufficient. A peculiar thing is that if you have a barbed wire between yourself and the guard he can't see you while you can shoot at him. Convinient in level 3 for instance.
  • Select weapon. I recommend AK47, since almost every guard is carrying one you have a almost unlimited access to ammo.
The M16 is more accurate, but the amount of ammo is often limited.
The mp5 has a neat semi-zoom feature which comes in handy when shooting at greater distances, but again, the ammo supply is often limited.
  • Pick up your binoculars. Zoom in on the guard.
  • Switch to normal view while carefully holding the mouse steady and shoot one shot at a time, allowing the barrel to return from the recoil. Shoot about 5 shots and then switch to binoculars again to check if the guard has moved, died or is still standing. You can disable cameras the same way.
Patrolling guards are more difficult. If it's possible try to align yourself so that you are standing in the same line as the guard is patrolling (see screenshot). Then you can do as above, since every shot will hit the target.

If it's not possible to align with the patrolling line you can try to zoom in on the guard, hold the crosshair in front of him. Try count the seconds it takes for the guard to walk from the "bracket" in the binocular to the crosshair. Then hold the binoculars in front of the guard again and when the guard passes the "bracket", start counting while you're switching to normal view. Fire when the time is out. This way of sniping is rather difficult and you might just waste ammo. Probably it's better to try to think out another way to take out/avoid the guard.

Tricks and tactics

Reload as often as possible
It is really a bore to have to reload in stressed situation. Furthermore, reloading keeps your ammo supply higher, since you can for instance only carry 128 shells of AK47 ammo, no matter how many more AK47s you pick up.

How to kill a guard waiting around the corner without taking damage
This is actually (another) weak side of IGI. It is possible to kill a guard by shooting him in the shoulder. If a guard is waiting around a corner you can align yourself so that you can see his shoulder and shoot him there. Strangely enough the guard does not see your shoulder, he only sees you when you have eye-contact, i.e. when you can see his head. Here is how you do to align yourself properly.

  1. Toggle to Walk mode (in run mode your movements are too quick to be accurate).
  2. Hold your crosshair a bit outside the corner. Move slowly forwards.
  3. If you're coming too close to the wall, hold the crosshair "inside" of the corner and move backwards.
  4. When you see the guard's shoulder, use binoculars, zoom in and aim
  5. Switch to normal view; shoot.

Clearing barracks
It is possible to shoot through walls, something you might learn the hard way. You can use this to your advantage, for instance when you're clearing a barrack. The best way is of course to toss in a handgrenade or use the secondary fire of the M16, but if you don't have that and need/want to clear a barrack you can shoot through the wall preferably with your AK47. Don't empty your magazine, though. Some guard(s) might survive and you'll need to take care of him (them) when he/they come(s) running.
You can also go around the barrack and shoot through the walls from outside.

Turn off alarms
It is possible to turn off alarms. Just push an alarm button. Sometimes the alerted guards will return to their barracks after awhile. If they don't and you kill them instead, the guards won't respawn and come back, which they sometimes do if the alarm is sounding.

You'll probably notice that it's not possible to turn off some alarms. In level 9 for instance you will not be able to turn off the alarm if you shoot the guard (or the camera) near the gate before the alarm system is disabled.

Disable tanks
You can disable tanks only with a LAW. If you have one, don't show yourself until the gun turret is facing away. You can hit at any place of the tank, so don't aim for too long. An alerted tank is a very difficult opponent, while an unalerted tank is an easy target.

Headshot kills
If you're sneaking up on an enemy, try to shoot him in the head. This especially counts for the spetnaz in the last levels. They seem to have a bullet proof vest, so it seems like you need to hit more times before they die.

Cure yourself
Use the medikits as soon as you can. It's no use to die having +100 in medikits.

Silent weapons
Some guards are alerted by noise. Use the mp5 instead of AK47 in situations where guards might hear you shoot.

Slide a ladder
You can rapidly slide down a ladder (instead of climbing down), just hit the use button.

Run, Forrest, run!
You run faster if you jump while running. Time your jump so that you take one or two steps between the jumps. If you jump immediately after a jump you will jump straight up instead of forwards (this run-jump-feature is particulary good in level 10 after you've shot the guards at the first truck).
