What is HTML anyway? HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) is computer
language that forms the building blocks of the web. Using a number of
"tags", you can build web pages, using a variety of formatting methods.

For some people, the best way to learn how to build a site is actually to read a book. The organization that creates the specifications by which the web languages used to create pages and add effects are based upon, the site could be more friendly but does provide the final word on which HTML tags do what.

SOFTWARE APPLICATIONS
Listed here are some of the standard tools that are used in building a web site. Typically, 3 types of tools are used in conjunction with one another: Image Editors (draw and create the graphics that will comprise your site), Web/HTML Editors (build the code and foundations on which your website stands), FTP Clients (sometimes included in the previous, to get the files that make up your site from your computer to the server).


Adobe Photoshop (Image Editor/Graphics)

The leading image editing program, though expensive ($609), is the standard for creating graphics on the web.

An excellent program for creating web sites with WYSIWYG tools as well as extensive source code editing features.

Bare Bones Software BBEdit (Web Editor)

The best text editor for the Macintosh, for those who want to get right into writing HTML with no frills attached. Color syntax, HTML tag building, and more. Also features FTP functionality allowing you to edit files remotely on your server.
