Students from Mr.
Clyde Kobashigawa's class began Project Stewardship in the Fall
2003. They are shown here at the trailhead to Kaluaa Gulch,
Honouliuli Preserve.
The program began
with an introductory hike introducing students to the plants found at
Honouliuli Preserve, including these papala kepau trees (Pisonia
sp.).
On their second
field trip, students were introduced to the plots that they would adopt
for the duration of the school year. They identified plants and
animals present and did point-intercept monitoring along a transect within
their plot.
Students returned to Honouliuli Preserve twice more to remove invasive alien
vegetation from their plot and out-plant native species, following the
restoration plan that students developed.
