Chinese Chess
The game board consists of two neighbouring nations, seperated by a river. The river represents the Hwang Ho or Yellow River, which is said to be the mother of the Chinese people.

Criss-crossing each kingdom are lines that represent roads or paths. The pieces reside on the intersect points of the lines on the board. All the pieces must move along these paths, with two exceptions: the horse and the elephant. The pieces may also veer off the paths if they are crossing the river.

In the heart of each kingdom lies the palace, where the general and guards must remain.
