Sir Paul stood by the side of his companions during the night before the wedding. Richard was singing to the knights and John was talking to the ladies, and George was quiet at his corner, looking to the fire glowing and to the people laughing. The whole kingdom was joyful, for his king had found a wife, the best of all the ladies of the world.
"A very big feast, isn't it so, Sir Paul?", George
asked, coming closer to the fire.
"Fit for a king.", Paul answered.
"I have a question."
"Speak up."
"How did you become a knight?"
"I save the king's life in the battlefield, against the French."
"That is a very big honour."
"The biggest honour a man can ever have, George. If you prove
to be a good man, you will be a knight yourself. That doesn't
come easy."
"Nothing in life comes easy, Sir Paul. Nothing in life.",
George sighed, looking to John that was still talking to the ladies.
"Now you look John Laennon. He's what in my land is called
'swine'."
"I beg you pardon?"
"A good man. A brave man. But a 'swine', a ladies' man. One
of these days, a woman will turn his head upside down, and then
it's the end of John Laennon, you write that down."
"You might be right in that, young George...but why this
strange comment? Don't you like them?", Paul asked, pointing
the ladies.
"Like all men in England, yes I do. But I want to dedicate
myself to only one. You cannot give your life to all the women
of England!"
"Not enough lives, I suppose.", Sir Paul chuckled. "You
are a good man, George Harryson. You will find your belle dame
soon, I am sure."
"And you, Sir Paul? Do you like them?"
"Like all men in England.", he laughed, and George laughed,
then Sir Paul turned serious again. "But there's all women
in England and there is the fate of this very knight."
"What fate, Sir?"
"Many nights ago, when I was in the battlefield, I had a
dream. And in this dream I was told that I wouldn't die in that
field, but because of a lady that I would meet. Since then, I
have been waiting on the woman that will take my life. It will
be a love story to be written in stone, but it will kill me."
"You seem calm to a man with such a fate.", George asked,
surprised.
"I cannot do anything, young George. It's written up there.",
he said, pointing the sky. "That is my fate. I am making
my best to be a good knigh and a good man, because when I meet
this lady, I will lose my mind. I will be madly in love, and she
will love me too. And then I will die, for it's written."
"And do you know how will you die?"
"No. Does that matter?"
"Does that matter?", George repeated. The fire was dying.
The morning was rising. All seemed perfect for the wedding day.
It was when someone yelled from the castle. Heads raised. Eyes
looked. John stopped mid-way the kiss he was to give to a blonde
lady near him.
"By God, what happened there?", George said, looking to the window where the yell came from. His questions were answered when an old man leaned on the window and shouted:
"Lady Guinevere! Where's Lady Guinevere?"
"What happened?", Richard asked.
"It seems that the queen-to-be disappeared.", George
said. "Strange!"
Sir Paul headed to the castle, with Richard by his side. Inside the castle, sadness and fear. The room of King Arthur's bride was destroyed, and there were people standing all around, wanting to know what happened. Sir Paul and Richard stared at the vision of the disaster, when a man came walking to them.
"You understand what happened here, young one?",
he asked Richard.
"I wish I knew, Sir."
"Don't you even have a guess?"
"I have, Sir. I think it could be Morgana, the witch."
"Why?"
"As far as I heard, she wasn't invited to the wedding, was
she?"
The old man smiled. "You are a very clever man, Richard
de Stark."
"How do you know my name?"
"He knows everything.", Sir Paul smiled and bowed. "He's
Merlin, the wizard."
"God, oh God", Richard said, leaning to the ground bowing.
"I am sorry."
"Why should you be sorry? You were very polite, as a good
knight should be."
"I am not a knight, nor I plan to be, Sir.", Richard
said.
"You cannot fight against your destiny, young one."
Merlin turned to the men. "Go and bring the king with you." The men left the room, and Sir Paul stood with Richard de Stark.
"You are very clever, young one. I see a bright future
in your eyes."
"Really, Sir?"
"Yes, you and your kin will breed a generation of men that
will change the world."
"That really flattens me, Sir."
"And you, Sir Paul, you also should be jolly, for your kin
will bring a queen to the world."
King Arthur entered the room and the three men bowed his presence. He was the most miserable man in the world. His eyes were dead and his fancy clothing nothing meant.
"Merlin, where is my bride?"
"In hazardous territory, your majesty. I suspect she is at
the hands of your step-sister, Morgana Le Fay."
Arthur sighed and ran his hands through his hair and sighed.
"Bring my best knights and send them to her castle. I
want my bride back!"
"Majesty, sorry if I sound rude, but that will not work.",
Richard said, and all the men looked to him.
"I beg you pardon?", Merlin said.
"If you send all your knights, they will all die.",
Richard answered.
"What do you suggest, then?"
"Send someone she doesn't know. Don't send your known knights,
or else they won't return."
Merlin looked to Arthur. "He's a smart young man. Listen
to what he says."
"What if I send you, young one?", Arthur asked.
"I'm not a knight, your majesty, nor I plan to be."
"I will make you a knight right now, if this is the trouble
that stops you."
"Make my friends knights, they want and need this high honour.
As for me, please leave me as I am. I will go to Morgana's territory
and I will bring your wife, but I won't shed blood for that."
"Why are you so humble, Richard?", Merlin asked.
"I grew up in a humble family.", he summarized.
"You cannot fight against his will, Arthur. Bring your friends,
Richard, and you will leave after Lady Guinevere. Sir Paul, you
will go after them."
"That honours me.", Sir Paul said, scared.
