Blanket Tips And Guidelines
We ONLY accept blankets made with NEW, CLEAN, AND WASHABLE
materials in infant, child, or teen friendly colors.
We accept blankets that are crocheted, quilted, knitted, fleece
blankets, or a tied comforter.
Remember these blankets are meant to be colorful, cheerful, and
cuddly. We ask that every item donated be made of NEW MATERIALS.
Due to recent federal changes, we can not accept blankets that have embellishments such as buttons, blankets with metallic type thread in them or blankets with fabric print on them.
Please do not use OLD OR USED MATERIALS to make a Project
Linus blanket. Musty smelling fabric has mold spores in it that can cause an allergic
reaction. The older the fabric is the more fragile the fibers become and will break down
and tear with each washing.
Blankets that smell of smoke or strong chemicals, or have pet
hair on them, cannot be accepted as they may produce severe allergic reactions in the
children. Please sew in smoke-free, pet hair free environment, or thoroughly wash the
blanket before donating it. If you wash the blanket, you are welcome to put it
inside a zip lock type bag.
Note regarding fleece blankets: We have received several fringed
fleece blankets recently with the knots in the fleece tied so tightly that the blanket
would not lay flat - the blankets look more like a bowl or basket than a blanket.
We have had to take the time to cut off all the fringe which
reduces the size of the blanket and wastes a lot of fabric. If you knot the fringe -
Please DO NOT TIE THE KNOTS TOO TIGHTLY. Please finish all 4 sides of fleece blankets by
either fringing, hemming, or surging. Please do not donate double layered fleece blankets. They are too heavy for most of our needs.
BLANKETS MUST BE HANDMADE (not store bought). However, a store
bought blanket like a fleece blanket that is given a homemade touch by crocheting an edge
on it, appliquing on it, etc. is acceptable.
Nearly all of the blankets we receive are wonderful, but there
have been some that don't meet these qualifications. Rarely, we have had to deem a blanket
unacceptable for Project Linus. These blankets are then donated to other charities that
serve veterans, individuals in nursing homes, the homeless, animals in shelters, etc.
Suggested materials:
* 100% cotton fabric
* flannel
* polar fleece
* acrylic yarn
Unsuitable materials
* tapestry, polyester double knit, felt, vinyl, wool, corduroy, burlap
* wool yarn
* materials that aren't cuddly & soft
* used, soiled or old materials buttons, metallic threads, glitter, fabric paint and other items that might be dangerous to a small child.
Important Reminders:
* Batting in quilts should be sewn into outer seams.
*If blanket is tied, anchor 4-6 inches and cut ties to 1 inch or
less in length. Yarn tends to work its way out of the quilt. We suggest embroidery floss
for tying.
* Please be sure to COMPLETE the construction of your blanket
including clipping threads, weaving in yarn ends, finishing all 4 edges of fleece
blankets, etc.
* Please remove all pins before turning in your blanket, check,
double check and triple check it please. It's better you find that pin and not the child
who receives your blanket.
* If you attach a note to the blanket, please do so using a
safety pin or tape. Notes can become detached in handling and the pin left for a child to
find.
