Temperature at Arches
Go back to the Arches Information Page
In the summer time, temperatures can go over 100 degrees (F).  In winter temperatures drop below 32 degrees.  In one day, temperatures may fluctuate as much as 50 degrees!
Because Arches is in a desert it acts like one.  There are less bugs in the spring and fall when temperatures are more comfortable.  The low air moisture lets sun reach the ground making a hot day.
There is about 9 inches of precipitation in a year, mostly from the water runoff from the snow.  Still, there is very little rainfall.
According to the Gorp website, the surface temperatures in direct sunlight are commonly 25 to 50 degrees (F) warmer than the air temperatire six feet above.  Temperatures in the shade may be cooler by 20 or more degrees.
Extreme temperatures are responsible for most formations.
