Bar: Son

Bat: Daughter

Bar Mitzvah: Son of the Commandments.    Commandment that a 13 year old boy becomes responsible for following the Mitzvot  on his own. 

Bat Mitzvah:   Daughter of the Commandments.  Ceremony started in 1922 making a 12 year old girl responsible for following the commandments in the same manner that a boy does.  

Bimah: Platform in the sanctuary where Torah is read.

D'var Torah: Short talk about the Torah portion or Haftorah

Haftarah: A reading from the prophets or writings, that   concludes the Torah serivice

Ketuvim: The Book of Prophets

Maftir: Last Aliyah,  usually reserved for the Bar or Bat Mitzvah

Minyan: Quorum of ten adults necessary for a service

Mitzvah: A Commandment from G-D

Mitzvot: Hebrew for Commandments.  Laws which teach a Jew how to live his life

Parsha: Torah Portion of the Week

Seudat Mitzvah: Festive Meal served after performing a Mitzvah
