Required Reading List

Students must read any two books from the following list:

  • Business @ the Speed of Thought, by Bill Gates – Importance of technology and information in the business environment
  • Straight from the Gut, By Jack Welch – The autobiography of the man who re-invented GE and made it number one in all it’s endeavors
  • Defying the Odds by Marcia Israel-Curley – Autobiography of the founder of Judy’s clothing stores
  • Fish! Tales by Stephen C. Lundin, et al – Real-life stories about people who transformed their workplace that will transform your life
  • The Cuckoo’s Egg: Tracking a Spy Through the Maze of Computer Espionage by Cliff Stoll – Fascinating story about tracking a computer hacker in the days before people knew the importance of computer security
  • Who Moved my Cheese?  by Spencer Johnson – A fun parable that helps you understand and manage change in your life
  • Our Iceberg is Melting, by John Kotter, et al – A “Happy Feet” for businesses and people who are dealing with change
  • Raving Fans by Ken Blanchard and Sheldon Bowles – This parable presents a revolutionary approach to customer service
  • The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens, by Sean Covey –The lessons from the business book, applied to teenagers

Alternatively, students can suggest a book to the instructor, and if approved, may replace ONE book from this list.

Discussion Questions

The following is the format for the book discussion. Each student will give a 8-minute presentation on their book and then lead a 5-minute Q&A session.

  1. Summarize the book (5 minutes)
  2. Describe something that you either read or learned from the book that has personal meaning to you (2 minutes)
  3. Tell the group why they should read the book, or why not (1 minute)

Prepare two or more questions based on the book and your presentation that you can pose to the group to stimulate discussion. These should be open-ended questions.
