HISTORY
L.A.W.S.
PROJECT
The mission of Project L.A.W.S. is to provide at-risk youth with an opportunity to interact with successful people and business and professional enterprises through on-the-job training. Our experience is that this exposure has a profound positive affect on young people at a critical time in their development.  Students in our program make more informed choices about their future and about the level of effort it will take to achieve their personal, educational, and professional goals.

Many people, especially young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, have no idea what jobs are available in the work place and what it will take to succeed in them   A Project for Learning and Achieving Work Skills was started in 1992 for that very reason.  We started with four students working at the Brown & Bain law firm, and we now average 20 students per summer being placed in various law firms and corporations in the Metro Phoenix area.

Students begin every morning in a
Project L.A.W.S. training program.  The training sessions include practical information on personal time management, how to prepare a budget and establish a checking or savings account.  It also provides guidance on what employers expect of their employees - punctuality, task management, and personal grooming, among other things.  During the program each student learns how to prepare a resume and creates a presentation regarding career and educational goals.

Area business and professional firms have joined us to invest in the success of our students. The young people work for 8 weeks in a corporate office, rotating through a variety of jobs, such as file room, accounting department, computer services, and shadowing the attorney or corporate executive.  Each firm assigns a contact person to serve as mentor to our students, to help them understand what is expected of them and how they can maximize their internship experience.
